Trainer Tobie Spies has enjoyed a good 2019 KZN Champions Season and the stable bagged another minor feature when the well-supported CTS graduate What You Are raced clear to win Saturday’s Listed Devon Air Stakes over 1400m at Greyville.

Two-year-old What You Are (18-10 favourite) ran on well under Corne Orffer and landed the prize from stablemate Sapphire Rock (45-1).

What You are was identified as a good bet on Tellytrack’s Under Starter’s Orders, where the replay of the Gr1 Allan Robertson Champion Stakes shows her running on well but suffering interference late in the race.

“What You Are was unlucky not to have run in the first three in the Allan Robertson, she is a filly with good ability,” said Spies.

A daughter of promising first-season sire Captain Of All (Captain Al), What You Are races for Spies in partnership with Archar Head’s Cape Leopard Trust. She will be aimed next at the Gr3 Golden Slipper on Durban July day, and she will run provided she gets a good draw. If she doesn’t, the Gr1 Thekwini Stakes on 27 July will be her next mission.

What You Are was a R70,000 purchase from the CTS March Sale in 2018. She was bred by Terry Andrews of Sorrento Stud.
