Princess Calla, a R600 000 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale graduate, defeated Trickster, a R700,000 buy from the same sale, in Saturday’s Gr2 Western Cape Fillies Championship over 1400m at Kenilworth.

The pair had locked horns in the Gr1 Thekwini Stakes over 1600m at Greyville in August, when Princess Calla ran on late to edge Trickster out of third place in a race won by star filly Anything Goes.

It was, therefore, not surprising to see jockey Grant van Niekerk try to make every post a winning one over the shorter trip, probably with the thought that Trickster would outrun her Graded rival before she found her stride.

But while Trickster tried her best and ran a good race, Princess Calla was never far behind her and gave notice of her intentions just moments after the field had swung for home. Princess Calla (4-1) put the result beyond doubt in a matter of strides when she raced clear under Craig Zackey for a smooth win two-length success, clocking 87,37 secs.

Zackey said: “I got her going before the bend to put some pressure on the others. She’s scopy with lots of class and won full of running.”

Trainer Adam Marcus said: “She was green and clipped heels when she ran third in the Thekwini and Anton Marcus gave me very good feedback that day. She hadn’t had a grass gallop before this race and hadn’t been around the left-handed bend so she won on pure class.”

Bred by Maine Chance Farms and owned by Mario Ferreira, Princess Calla was her sire Flower 25th stakes winner. She was produced from the mare Princess Royal, by Captain Al. She has won R153 750 from three starts and is likely to be aimed at the Gr1 Fillies Guineas, a race Marcus and Zackey won last year with Missisippi Burning.
