Summerveld trainer Nathan Kotzen enjoyed his first Listed success when two-year-old colt Kayden’s Pride (Muzi Yeni) flew up late in the Gatecrasher Stakes over 1400m at Greyville on Saturday to defeat the favourite, Alramz. Both are graduates of the 2018 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

Kayden’s Pride is a Nadeson Park-bred son of Gimmethegreenlight and the one-time winner Red Apple, by Shoe Danzig. He was originally sold for only R50,000, while Alramz (Ridgemont/Highlands) fetched R1,4-million – showing again how yearlings from both ends of the scale can perform for CTS buyers.

Kotzen, who worked as an assistant trainer to Mike de Kock for almost 20 years, was chuffed to have beaten his old boss in the Gatecrasher, the cherry on top of a promising second season as a licenced trainer in which he has more than doubled his tally of winners.

Kotzen said: “Mike came to shake my hand, it was a privilege to have beaten him with my first listed winner. Kayden’s Pride was syndicated by Trevor Padyachee, Trevor Naicker and friends, who also have Master Keys and Tommy Grand with me, they are good guys to train for.

“Kayden’s Pride needs more ground, he will see out 2000m. He shows that in work at home. Our next mission, however, will be the KZN Yearling Sale Million over 1300m on July Day, I think it will be an easier picking for us than the Gr2 Golden Horseshoe.

“After that, we’ll look at the Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes on the last day of the season.”
