Elusive Trader tends to give of his best in mid-Summer, and he bagged the Listed Southeaster Sprint on Saturday almost a year to the day of his first success in this race, in 2019.

The 1100m At Kenilworth is somewhat of a specialist’s trip, and Mark van Deventer, racing manager to Elusive Trader’s part-owner Bryn Ressell, suggested in a pre-race interview that trainer Greg Ennion had pointed the gelding at a second Southeaster.

“He needs a very good ride, however, the timing has to be right,” noted Van Deventer – and this was provided by Anton Marcus, who tucked his mount in just behind the leading line. Elusive Trader received his shake-up with 250m to go, raced into contention and kept on well to beat Constable by 0.50-lenghts in a time of 65,83s.

Five-year-old Elusive Trader has won four races with thirteen places from twenty-eight starts for over R1.5 Million in stakes. Bred by Terry Andrews at Sorrento Stud, he is by Elusive Fort from the one-time winner Armatrading, by VAR – incidentally a half-sister to Ennion’s former top racer, Nocturnal Affair.

Elusive Trader was a R300,000 buy from the CTS Ready To Run Sale at Durbanville in 2017.
