Thirty-seven individual stallions from around the world are represented at the 2016 Cape Premier Yearling Sale that starts on Thursday, 21 January at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Here is a look at the represented stallions and some of their outstanding lots on offer, detailed by SARAH WHITELAW of Sporting Post.

Black Minnaloushe (Storm Cat – Coral Dance)

Winner of the 2001 Irish 2000 Guineas, Black Minnaloushe has made his mark at stud in South Africa through a host of top class performers including Triple Crown champion Louis The King, as well as such G1 stars as Ash Cloud, Gold Onyx and Kochka. His latest star was last season’s G1 SA Nursery winner Arabian Beat. He has 4 lots:

Lot 46 – a well related filly bred on the strong Storm Cat/Gone West cross, this filly is out of a full sister to Champion 2YO Colt Argonaut. With her sire responsible for champion 2YOS Hollinger, Jokers Wild and Kochka, this filly is certainly bred to shine at two!

Lot 75 – inbred to the great champion Nijinsky II, this colt is out of a Jallad half sister to G2 performer Cape Town. His second dam is a stakes winner and this is the famed family of champions Diesis and Kris, among others.

Lot 123 – a full brother to a stakes placed runner and half brother to the G2 filly Earth’s Orbit, this well related colt’s relatives include champion sprinter Hinterland and Horse Of The Year and champion sire Foveros.

Lot 199 – bred on the same cross as top class stakes winner Cat And The Moon, this colt is out of a half sister to G1 SA Classic winner English Garden and hails from the same family as G1 stars Colonial Girl and Lord Shirldor.

Bold Silvano (Silvano – Bold Saffron)

The first son of champion sire Silvano to retire to stud in South Africa, Bold Silvano was an Equus Champion who won the G1 Vodacom Durban July. The handsome bay also enjoyed success in Dubai where he accounted for a world class field to win the G3 Al Maktoum Challenge (Round 2). He made a promising start when his very first runner Besotted won on debut.

Lot 143 – a half brother to three winners, this colt is out of a G2 placed daughter of emerging broodmare sire Count Dubois (damsire of G1 filly Melliflora) and hails from the family of champion sprinter Mythical Flight.

Byword (Peintre Celebre – Binche)

A superb racehorse who earned more than £690 0000 in stakes, Byword was France’s Highweight Older Horse in 2010. The charismatic chestnut, a half brother to multiple G1 winner Proviso, scored his signature win in Royal Ascot’s G1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes – a race won previously by such outstanding sires as Bayardo and Hyperion, as well as the highly successful Duke Of Marmalade and Ela-Mana-Mou. He has 7 lots on offer:

Lot 6 – a half sister to six winners, including three stakes fillies, this well related filly is from the great Enchanting family, which produced such star fillies as Enchantress, Harry’s Charm, Laverna and last season’s sensation, Siren’s Call.

Lot 182 – a half brother to smart stakes winner Pacific Breeze, this colt hails from the wonderful Soaring family, and his relatives include champions Devil’s Bag, Glorious Song and Singspiel, champion US sire Saint Ballado, and top stallions Rahy and Rakeen.

Lot 185 – out of a winning daughter of G1 Middle Park Stakes winner Ad Valorem, this colt’s dam is a half-sister to AUS$800 000 earner and G3 winner Generalife. His second dam is a stakes placed daughter of the great Australian sire Redoute’s Choice.

Lot 254 – this attractive colt is out of G1 SA Fillies Classic runner up Kalami – whose sire, champion Daylami, is also broodmare sire of Australian champion Pierro. This is the family of millionaire and multiple stakes winner Mannequin.

Captain Al (Al Mufti – Off To War)

One of South Africa’s elite sires and Champion Sire last season, the seven times champion sire of two-year-olds had a remarkable run of success in 2015, where his impressive tally of stakes winners included no fewer than four individual G1 winners.The versatility of Captain Al was underlined by the fact he was represented by a champion sprinter and a G1 SA Oaks winner over 2450m in the same season. The champion has 23 lots:

Lot 5 – bred on the same cross as G1 winner Exhilaration, this colt is out of a four time winning daughter of top broodmare sire Elliodor from the family of G1 Queen’s Plate winner Crimson Waves and G2 Dingaans hero Unparalleled.

Lot 17 – a brother to five winners, this colt is a full brother to the stakes horse Ribbons For Thee and Captain’s Emblem. Bred like stakes winner Captain’s Daughter, he is out of the high class G1 Allan Robertson runner up Main Emblem.

Lot 64 – another out of a mare by emerging broodmare sire National Emblem, this colt’s dam is a half sister to Captain Al’s G1 son Captain’s Reserve. His second dam is unbeaten G1 winning champion Private Reserve.

Lot 68 – out of the high class stakes placed mare Roman Eagle, this colt is bred on the same Captain Al/Caesour cross as G1 Paddock Stakes winner Emerald Cove. This is the great Kiss Of Peace family.

Lot 70 – this beautifully bred filly is out of G1 Thekwini Stakes winner Roxanne and is a full sister to Listed Swallow Stakes winner Sting Operation. Bred like champion Carry On Alice (also out of a Western Winter mare).

Lot 81 – a full sister to Equus Champion All Is Secret and Hong Kong winner Secret Command, this filly is out of Goldkeeper’s top class daughter Secret Of Victoria, a G2 winning half sister to Equus Champion Rabiya and 3 other stakes winners. Also the family of promising performer Bela-Bela.

Lot 82 – out of Listed Winter Oaks winner Secret Risk, (and bred like G2 winner Captain’s Call), this colt’s first three dams were all black type performers!

Lot 85 – a half brother to the record breaking R5.2 million Dynasty colt, this colt’s dam is a full sister to multiple G1 winner and champion SA sire Silvano, and a half sister to multiple G1 winning sire Sabiango.

Lot 111 – out of a high class G3 daughter of Redoute’s Choice (also damsire of G1 winners Sacred Falls, Stay With Me and Zoustar), this colt hails from the family of Aussie G1 winners Akhenaton and Paint.

Lot 140 – this colt is out of a full sister to Singapore Champion Lizarre and high class local performer Lake Arthur and his relatives also include G1 Premier’s Champion Stakes hero Talahatchie and this season’s very smart filly Jane S Piddy.

Lot 148 – a half brother to 2 winners including G1 Golden Horseshoe winner Afrikaburn, this colt’s third dam is superstar sprinter Sigy. Broodmare sire Peintre Celebre is an outstanding maternal grandsire with his daughters having produced such as G1 Melbourne Cup hero Protectionist, G1 Oaks winner Talent and the tragically ill-fated superstar Red Cadeaux.

Lot 162 – a three parts brother to top sprinter Barbosa and G2 winner Fragrant Al (and bred like G1 filly Princess Royal), this colt is out of a winning half sister to G3 winner Fine Feather.

Lot 169 – bred to be extremely quick, this filly is out of a four time winning full sister to Horse Of The Year and champion sprinter National Colour, a multiple G1 winner in South Africa and unlucky not win a G1 sprint in Europe.

Lot 171 – another bred like ill-fated G1 winner Emerald Cove, this filly is out of a four time winning daughter of Caesour. This is the great Izindaba family responsible for multiple G1 winning female Duchess Daba.

Lot 189 – a colt out of a mare by champion sire and successful broodmare sire Dansili, he hails from a high class European family, with his dam very closely related to former G3 Jersey Stakes hero Membership.

Lot 191 – out of a Galileo half sister to G3 winner Blake, this colt is from the same family as champion sire Centaine as well as the outstanding broodmare Procrastinate – dam of champion sprinter Laisserfaire and local sire Time Thief.

Lot 204 – a three parts brother to smart Captain Al sired stakes winners Captain In Commmand and Canadian Sunset, this colt is out of a National Emblem half sister to G3 winner Encircle.

Lot 206 – bred on the same cross as G1 winner Captain America, this filly is out of a full sister to Equus Champion and hugely promising young sire Elusive Fort. This is the great “E” family, responsible for champions the world over.

Lot 213 – a filly out of G2 SA Oaks runner up First Power, this lot’s dam is a three parts sister to the exported G1 Champions Cup winner Master Plan and also from the family of champion filly Along Came Polly.

Lot 228 – a half brother to a four time winner overseas, this colt is out of a half sister to a US stakes winner. His third dam is the outstanding Dancing Champ mare Au Printemps, whose notable offspring include G1 Breeders Cup Juvenile and now deceased top sire Success Express.

Lot 245 – another regally bred filly, she is out of a three time winning Giant’s Causeway mare, whose own dam is a three parts sister to European Guineas winners Dupont and Pacino.

Lot 247 – a half brother to four winners (one G3 placed), this colt is out of Jet Master’s G3 Acacia Hcp winner Jet Danza.

Lot 252 – out of a three parts sister to Guineas winners Dupont and Pacino, this blue blooded colt’s third dam is 1000 Guineas runner up Kerrera – herself dam of French 1000 Guineas second Firth Of Lorne.

Count Du Bois (Zafonic – Madame Du Bois)

The sire of last season’s Equus Champion 3YO French Navy, Count Dubois is one of South Africa’s most reliable sires of stakes winners. The G1 winning son of Zafonic’s tally of high class performers include champion filly Asylum Seeker, millionaire and promising sire Biarritz and G1 heroes Zaitoon and Zeeno. He has 3 lots:

Lot 95 – a half brother to 3 winners including the very smart stakes performer Alpha Pegasi, this colt is out of a Jallad half sister to the juvenile stakes winner Resolution Bay, herself in turn dam of ill-fated G1 Paddock Stakes winner Emerald Cove.

Lot 130 – this well bred filly is a full sister to the outstanding filly Fairyinthewoods, whose six wins included the G2 Southern Cross Stakes, and stakes placed Bayard. Bred on similar terms to champion French Navy and out of a half sister to champion Tarn Fairy, this filly is also a half sister to the flying filly, Comet Chaser.

Lot 170 – a half sister to 7 winners, this filly’s siblings include G1 performer Lubricator and the classic placed London Fashion. Her dam is a full sister to an Oaks winner as well as top Hong Kong galloper Caracoler.

Delago Deluxe (Encosta de Lago – Succeeding)

A former Equus Champion 2YO who trained on to land the G1 Golden Horse Sprint, the Australian bred returned Down Under to take up stud duties. The son of champion sire Encosta De Lago (also sire of the sensational Northern Meteor) has been well received in Australia, where he has covered more than 100 mares in each of his first two seasons. He has 2 lots on sale:

Lot 158 – Inbred to Northern Dancer and Fairy Bridge through the siblings Sadler’s Wells and Fairy King, this colt is out of a half sister to three major stakes winners including G1 winner Bollinger. Second dam is Bint Marscay, winner of the G1 Golden Slipper.

Lot 164 – this filly is out of a Dehere half sister to the top class Aussie runner Conservatorium, a G2 winner of nearly AUS$800 000 in prize money.

Dynasty (Fort Wood – Blake’s Affair)

A legend on the racetrack, Dynasty is also one of the best stallions ever bred in South Africa. The sire of three sons named Horse Of The Year, the outstanding son of Fort Wood is the sire of last year’s R5.2 million record breaking colt, who was sold at this very sale! To date, Dynasty has 13 G1 horses to his credit, including champions Beach Beauty, Futura, Irish Flame and Legislate. He has 15 lots on offer – bring the cheque books!

Lot 35 – this well bred colt is a half brother to recent G2 Selangor Cup winner and classic contender Hard Day’s Night. From a top family, he is related to numerous G1 stars including champions Bluffing and Tecla Bluff, with other recent stars including 2015 G1 Summer Cup second Deo Juvente.

Lot 42 – one of the stars of the sale. This is the half brother to wonder filly Silver Mountain, a five length winner of the recent G1 Cape Fillies Guineas, and his dam is a stakes winning half sister to G1 Breeders Cup Mile winner Artie Schiller (like the colt on offer by a Sadler’s Wells line stallion).

Lot 65 – inbred to the legendary sire Sadler’s Wells, this colt is out of a half sister to the Sadler’s Wells line G1 winner and sire Potala Palace – and from the very same family as Sadler’s Wells and Nureyev et al.

Lot 73 – a sister to three winners, this filly is out of a four time winning daughter of leading sire and broodmare sire Royal Academy and is from a prolific black type family.

Lot 74 – out of a mare by champion sire and broodmare sire Storm Cat, this superbly bred filly hails from the same family as one of the best US performers of recent times – multiple G1 winner Private Zone. She also hails from the same family as Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew and sire legend Mr Prospector. What a pedigree!

Lot 100 – out of a four time winning A P Indy half sister to US G1 winner Magnificent Song, this filly traces back directly to tap-root mare Bellesoeur, ancestress of such G1 winners as Hawaiian Sound, Polish Patriot and Stuka.

Lot 125 – half brother to 3 winners, this colt is out of a stakes placed daughter of champion sprinter Goldmark and is thus bred on similar lines to ill-fated Equus Champion Big City Life.

Lot 139 – a true blue blood, she is out of a stakes placed half sister to G1 winner and sire Potala Palace, and her dam is a three parts sister to 2000 Guineas winner/King George hero Golan.

Lot 146 – a half brother to 3 winners including stakes winner Sealed With A Kiss, this colt’s second dam is Broodmare Of The Year Loyal Linda, one of a handful of broodmares to have produced 3 G1 winners.

Lot 152 – a half brother to 2 winners, including Oaks runner up Beloved Bettty, this colt’s first two dams are both stakes winners. Broodmare sire Arch is a top sire and broodmare sire, with his daughters having produced US champions I’ll Have Another and red hot sire Uncle Mo.

Lot 183 – out of a G3 winner by Danehill Dancer (thus bred on similar lines to star filly Minding), this blue blooded filly is from an outstanding Aga Khan family whose members include French Derby winner and top sire and broodmare sire Darshaan.

Lot 198 – this colt, a half brother to a winner, is out of a half sister to ill-fated champion and G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate heroine Mother Russia. Other notable relatives include Horse Of The Year Winter Solstice, himself also victorious in the L’Ormarins showpiece-twice.

Lot 208 – this colt is out of Listed Ladies Mile winner Even Money (by top broodmare sire Rich Man’s Gold) and is from the family of champion Wainui and top recent performers Blue Tiger, Pointing North and Rodoille.

Lot 220 – bred on the same Dynasty/Capture Him cross as champion Beach Beauty, this well related colt is a half brother to 4 winners, including G1 Gold Cup winner Wavin’ Flag. His dam was a stakes winner of five.

Lot 223 – a full sister to useful G3 performer Amber Palace, this filly is out of a Deputy Minister half sister to Canadian champion Embur’s Song.

Elusive Fort (Fort Wood – Ever Seeking)

Like Dynasty, Elusive Fort is an Equus Champion and multiple G1 winner by Fort Wood. From the wonderfully successful “E” family, Elusive Fort has made a tremendous start to his stud career, with G1 winners (Siren’s Call, Lauderdale) in his first two crops. He has 2 on offer:

Lot 160 – a full sister to the very smart sprinter Ernie (a close second in the recent Listed Southeaster Sprint), this filly hails from the family of July winner Gondolier and G1 sprinter San Carlos.

Lot 179 – a half sister to no fewer than eight winners, this filly is out of the useful G3 performer Corn Dodger. This is the great Corn family, whose numbers include ill-fated Cape Derby winner Corning Touch and the very quick G2 SA Fillies Nursery winner State Factor.

Gimmethegreenlight (More Than Ready – Yes She Can Cancan)

A son of leading sire Sebring’s sire More Than Ready, Gimmethegreenlight was an outstanding racehorse, who was as precocious as he was brilliant. The horse, whose first two-year-olds race this season, won his first four races at two, and trained on well to defeat the brilliant Variety Club in the 2012 G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate. He has 11 lots here:

Lot 12 – a half sister to 3 winners, one of whom won five, this filly’s dam is a stakes placed Northern Guest half sister to G1 winner Covenant, and Champion filly Promisefrommyheart (dam of G2 winner and sire Master Of My Fate). Lot 77 – this filly’s dam is an own sister to a G2 performer and her second dam is none other than G1 winner Divided Loyalty. Also the family of international G1 winning fillies Irridescence and Perfect Promise.

Lot 78 – out of a winning half sister to 13 time stakes winner Juan Pablo, this filly’s second dam is the top class G2 winning daughter of Sportsworld, La Deportista.

Lot 106 – bred on the reverse cross of G1 winner Miracles Of Life, this colt’s winning Redoute’s Choice dam is a half sister to a ten time stakes winner in Australia and this is the great Denise’s Joy family to boot.

Lot 126 – out of a daughter of the great sire and broodmare sire Galileo, this colt’s dam is a half sister to local champion and G1 Dubai Sheema Classic winner Sun Classique.

Lot 147 – out of G3 Final Fling Stakes runner up Aqua Star, this filly is from the family of SA’s first equine millionaire and leading sire Model Man, a winner of no fewer than five G1 races.

Lot 149 – a half sister to five winners, including this season’s stakes placed 3yo Rap Attack, this filly’s dam is a stakes winning full sister to multiple G1 winner Set Afire. Aquila Rapax, dam of this filly, is also very closely related to the G1 performers Nania, Red Ray and Brutal Force.

Lot 214 – this colt is out of a three time winning own sister to G3 August Stakes winner Storm Crossing, and his second dam is a G3 winning daughter of top sire and outstanding broodmare sire Elliodor.

Lot 236 – this well bred filly is out of a Windrush daughter, who was a ten time stakes winner. The family of high class filly Dancing Dynasty.

Lot 242 – this filly is out of a half sister to stakes winner Roman Wall and from the family of legendary champion Horse Chestnut, as well as champion Monyela and G1 Cape Fillies Guineas winner Sport’s Chestnut.

Greys Inn (Zabeel – Great Verdict)

An Equus Champion and Vodacom Durban July winner, Zabeel’s son Greys Inn has more than sired his share of high class performers since retiring to stud.

His top performers include G1 Queens’ Plate and SA Derby winners Legal Eagle and Royal Bencher, as well G1 winning miler King Of Pain and the sadly ill-fated Chekilli. He has 1 lot on offer:

Lot 167 – this is a half brother to 3 winners including G3 Winter Classic hero Royal Dreamer. His second dam is a G3 winning full sister to champion Tara’s Touch and this colt is inbred to the great mare Special.

Horse Chestnut (Fort Wood – London Wall)

Sadly now deceased, Horse Chestnut has strong claims to being the greatest racehorse ever bred in South Africa. The former Horse of The Year and Triple Crown winner has also made his mark at stud with such notable G1 winners as Chestnuts N Pearls and Lucifer’s Stone, as well as the likes of Banbury, Chestnut’s Rocket and promising filly Crystal Cavern. He has 3 lots:

Lot 4 – out of a three winning daughter of champion sire Captain Al (and bred on the increasing potent Sadler’s Wells/Captain Al cross), this colt hails from the same family as high class graded stakes winners American Connection and Lestat.

Lot 23 – out of a stakes placed own sister to a listed winner, this filly is out of a three parts sister to Hong Kong champion and multiple G1 winning sprinter Sacred Kingdom. Inbred to the great mare Fairy Bridge, this filly’s second dam is Australian G2 winner Love Of Mary.

Lot 188 – out of a half brother to US G3 winner Dancing (herself dam of useful local performer Macduff), this colt hails from the family of French champion Suave Dancer, as well as champion sire Habitat and the latter’s half brother and champion broodmare sire Northfields.

Jay Peg (Camden Park – Laptop Lady)

A grandson of the immortal A P Indy, Jay Peg was an outstanding racehorse who won Grade One races in three different countries. He has since gone on to enjoy plenty of success at stud, with his runners including such graded winners as Flash Drive, Hot Affair and Olympic Owen, as well as this season’s promising 3yos Exit Here and Victorious Jay. He has 1 lot:

Lot 129 – this well bred colt is inbred to the mighty mare Lassie Dear. Out of a stakes placed winner of seven, he is from the same family as local classic winners Field Flower and Royal Land, as well Horse Of The Year and eight times champion sire Bold Ruler.

Judpot (A P Indy – Miesque)

An A P Indy half brother to French classic winners East Of The Moon and Kingmambo (the latter an outstanding sire), Judpot is certainly living up to his pedigree. His first crop included G1 winners Along Came Polly and Forest Indigo, while his second has produced top class runners Deputy Jud and Double Whammy. He has 10 lots:

Lot 24 – inbred to the great Seattle Slew (like G1 winners Frosted and Morning Line), this colt is out of a stakes placed daughter of champion sire Encosta de Lago and is a direct descendant of champion Waya.

Lot 54 – out of a G3 daughter of champion sire and emerging broodmare sire Captain Al, this colt is inbred to the great mare Lassie Dear. From a top class family, his relatives include G1 SA Fillies Classic winner Bambina Stripes.

Lot 67 – a half sister to 2 winners, including a G3 performer, this filly’s G1 dam is an own sister to champion Rock Opera and exported SA Nursery winner Hit Song. Bred on the hugely successful A P Indy/Mr Prospector cross.

Lot 87 – a half brother to four winners, this colt’s siblings number the stakes winner and G1 SA Fillies Classic runner up Las Ramblas, and his second dam is by the legendary New Zealand sire Sir Tristram.

Lot 94 – this well bred colt is out of a winning half sister to G2 winner Park Lane and is out of top class racemare Hancock Park.

Lot 135 – bred on the same cross as G1 winner Forest Indigo, this colt is out of a mare very closely related to legendary champion Horse Chestnut and fellow champion Monyela.

Lot 200 – another inbred to Lassie Dear, this filly is out of the speedy Emmajo, a four time winner who was third in the G2 Southern Cross Stakes. She traces back directly to the great Renounce, winner of both the Met and Cape Guineas.

Lot 241 – a half brother to a stakes placed four time winner, this colt’s second dam is a stakes winning full sister to the dam of Equus Champion Yorker.

Lot 255 – a half sister to 3 winners including smart stakes winner Comtesse Dubois, this filly’s dam is a half sister to millionaire and promising sire Biarritz (his only runner is a stakes winner), from the family of star miler and classic winner Kapil.

Kahal (Machiavellian – Just A Mirage)

Now deceased, the son of Machiavellian has long been one of South Africa’s top sires. The sire of this season’s millionaire Champagne Have, Kahal’s 19 individual G1 performers include such top flight winners as Chocolicious, Desert Links, Noble Heir and Spiced Gold. He has 1 lot on offer:

Lot 133 – this well bred filly is out of a Danehill Dancer half sister to G1 Prix Ganay winner and sire Dark Moondancer. Her second dam is a daughter of champion sire Sadler’s Wells and flying machine Soba.

Lateral (Singspiel – Ligona)

A champion and group 1 winner at two, Lateral made a dazzling start to his stud career, with his first local crop including G1 winner Bilateral and G2 Dingaans hero Unparalleled. Smart filly Sapsan emerged from his second crop.

Lot 232 – a half sister to 7 winners, this filly is a half sister to G2 SA Fillies Nursery winner Hidden Beauty and is out of a half sister to G1 J&B Met winner Imperious Sue, among others.

Lope de Vega (Shamardal – Lady Vettori)

By outstanding sire Shamardal, French 2000 Guineas/Derby winner Lope De Vega made an outstanding start to his stud career, with four group winners (including champion Belardo) emerging from his first crop to race. He has a single lot on offer:
