Progressive three-year-old Vars Vicky, a graduate of the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, showed his class when downing a top-class field to win the G2 Senor Santa Stakes (1160m) at Turffontein on Saturday.

The Stuart Pettigrew trained gelding produced an electric turn of foot, under Muzi Yeni, which saw them get up close home, and score by a head, while accounting for a field which included a pair of G1 winners, in the form of Chimichuri Run and Eden Roc, as well as the likes of graded stakes winners Singforafa, Ikigai, Mardi Gras and Mount Pleasant.

Owned by Vicky Veeramootoo, Vars Vicky has now won five of just eight starts, with Saturday’s win the gelding’s third consecutive victory.

Bred by the Gary Player Stud, Vars Vicky was a R150 000 purchase, when knocked down to Stuart Pettigew, from the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

A 53rd stakes winner for his ever popular sire Var, Vars Vicky is out of the Captain Al mare Seminole -who won twice over 1000m and ran third in the Listed Irridescence Stakes.
