KLAWERVLEI’s in-form sire Count Dubois had a smart double at the Vaal on Thursday, when his Countess Antonia and Counterstroke won their respective races respectively. Countess Antonia, who is trained by Clinton Binda for Dreamstar Racing, broke her maiden convincingly over 1400m on Thursday to give her sire the first leg of a winning double.

Bred by Klawervlei Stud, Countess Antonia is bred on the same cross as Count Dubois’s Listed Drum Star Handicap winning son House Of Wax, and is the latest in a growing line of winners who are inbred to Gone West.

Count Dubois’s second winner on the day came in the form of Counterstroke, with that Lucky Houdalakis trained runner picking up his sixth career win when victorious over 1400m. Bred by Klawervlei Stud, the gelding is owned by Messrs Waterston, Gray, Strydom and his trainer. Counterstroke has proved a real money spinner for his connections, with Thursday’s win pushing his earnings to over R400 000.

Count Dubois, whose promising son Edict Of Nantes is set to take his place in Saturday week’s G1 Grand Parade Cape Guineas, is a proven sire, who produces graded winners year in and year out.

The G1 winning son of Zafonic, whose champion son French Navy is on track to make a return to the racecourse next week, is the sire of more than 40 stakes horses, including Equus Champions Asylum Seeker and French Navy, and Count Dubois runners have earned over R41 000 000 in prize money to date.
