Hendrik Winterbach, who proved his talent as a breeder with the likes of Irridesence and Perfect Promise, has consigned 11 lots to the 2018 Cape Premier Yearling Sale. He said that Winterbach Stud is entering exciting times, a period of growth.
Winterbach has joined forces with medical specialists Laurel Van Coller and Veronique Kritzinger to streamline their stud operation at Fyndraai, the Van Coller farm in Stellenbosch.
“We’ve just finished building new stables, we’re housing 64 mares and we’re as always committed to excellence. We look at the business of breeding long-term, our care starts when foals are in the womb, we pay attention to detail. We do the right things over a period of time, not just before the auction sales.”
Winterbach is proud of his 2018 consignment and said: “We’ve learnt over the years that you’re only able to compete at the CTS Sale if you offer top quality. If you don’t, you get a hiding. So we have some really nice yearlings on offer.”
He is especially fond of Lot 110, Dynastic Light, a bay filly by Dynasty from Gr1 placed Princess Of Light, who won six races and was versatile from 1400m to 2600m and further.
“Dynastic Light is an outstanding specimen,” Winterbach said. “She’s athletic, high on the leg with a good presence.”
He has similar views of Lot 101, Travetire, a filly by Silvano. “She’s quote mature, not a typical Silvano, also very athletic.”
Judy Brannigan of the NHRA managed to secure the smashing name “Ronaldo” for Lot 196, a colt by Silvano from A Star For Maria. His half-brother Fitzwilliam fetched R600,000 at last year’s sale.
“Ronaldo is a medium-sized colt, nicely balanced and strong,” Winterbach said.
The draft also includes two very nice colts by Visionaire (Lots 206 and 242) and a filly by Captain Al (Lot 8), who will be sold in the first hour of the sale.
“The Captain Al filly, Caribbean Sunset is beautiful, I think eye-catching is the right word. She’s medium-sized and beautifully balanced.”
Lot 143 is a colt by boom sire Twice Over from Smouldering, a half-sister to Likeithot. Aptly named “Forged In Fire”, his damline reflects a nice balance of speed and stamina.
A filly by Duke Of Marmalade (Lot 88), described as “a nice specimen”, a colt by Silvano from the immediate family of Captain Al (Lot 32) and a “typically strong and forward” What A Winter filly (Lot 150), will also get their share of attention.
Finally, there is Lot 137, Self-Mastery, a colt by freshman sire Captain Of All. “He throws nice foals, this is a big, strong horse,” Winterbach noted.
