modoro’s flagbearer Return Flight set her owner Chris van Niekerk back the grand sum of R20,000 at the CTS March 2017 Sale. Her Gr2 Gerald Rosenberg win at Turffontein on Saturday took her career earnings to R2,2-million. She’s won six of 11 and has at least another season of racing ahead of her.

Return Flight, last season’s Equus Champion Two Year Old Filly, set herself up for a bid on the GR1 Woolavington 2000 at Greyville next month, when she dictated the Rosenberg under Anton Marcus. This came on the back of her courageous SA Oaks win three weeks ago when she also led from pillar to post over 2450m.

Marcus rode a typically brave and confident race from the front and obviously knowing what he had under him, never panicked as he pushed the bargain buy out ahead of the chasing bunch and up the long Turffontein home straight.

There were a few challenges from the bunch, most notably the in-form Insignis who produced a solid run from midfield, but Return Flight stayed on relentlessly to win by 1,25 lengths.

Bred by Mike Sharkey, Return Flight was produced from the mare Heading Home, by Special Preview. Tarry suggested before and after the race that she was not 100% at her peak with the Woolavington as her target, and this will have rival trainers worrying.
