TUESDAY, 14 February, is Valentine’s Day and it is perhaps not unexpected that the horses competing at Kenilworth this Saturday, 11 February include Mr Lover Boy (Race 7), Mystical Gal (Race 3), Pop the Question (Race 2) and Arabian Passion (Race 1).  But there’s a lot more happening at Kenilworth, not indicated on the race card.  In particular, Saturday features the annual and growingly popular Horses for Causes Charity Race Day, Western Cape Racing’s opportunity to show how big the heart is that it wears on it’s sleeve.

The profits of the day are split between 14 NGOs, which include the Grooms School Trust, the Cart Horse Protection Association and the Jockey Academy Scholarship Fund.

There’s also a stallion auction, immediately after Race 4, at which breeders can secure services to the likes of Oratorio, Duke of Marmalade, Ideal World, Pathfork, Coup de Grace and Elusive Fort.  Proceeds of the auction are split equally between Horses for Causes and the Western Cape Equine Trust.

Other fun stuff is scheduled to take place on the day.  Those brave enough can have a workout on one of the Jockey Academy’s mechanical simulators.  There’s mini cricket, rugby and soccer for the youngsters, and a kids’ entertainment area.  There’s a jazz band, wheelchair dancing, a craft festival, food, sunshine and laughter.

Above all, there will be the opportunity to support the worthwhile work done by 14 local NGOs.  Contact for information, or to book seats in the Peninsula and Kenilworth Rooms.
