When Lyle Hewitson phoned to secure a ride in Saturday’s Gr3 Betting World 220 at Greyville, trainer Sean Tarry booked him on Shenanigans instead of Zillzaal, his preferred ride.
“I wanted to ride Zillzaal, I thought he had the right form for the race but Mr Tarry said to me, ‘Don’t worry, Shenanigans will give a good account of himself. So it was fortunate that I ended up on the right one!
CTS purchase Shenanigans (10-1) franked his Jubilee Handicap second place to the July fancied Barahin with a good late run to win the Betting World.
The very Zillzaal (28-10 favourite) made his way to the front to set the tempo and looked to be travelling well enough to make it a start-to-finish affair, but the alarm bells started ringing halfway down the straight and the field started to close down on the front runner. The Dazzler was on his shoulder with 300m to run, but challenges were now coming from all sides. Gimme One Night (13-1) and Shenanigans took off from more or less the same position, but under a skilful Lyle Hewitson ride the latter found a little extra to win by an extending neck from the former, with The dazzler in third and Zillzaal clinging on for fourth. “The pace was nice and it gave me time to relax him and build up. When I let him go, he picked it up, he ran all the way to the line,” said Hewitson.
Bred by Daytona Stud, Shenanigans is a five-year-old entire by Dynasty from Quizzy London, by Sportsworld. He is owned by Chris van Niekerk.
