SHE’s A Giver, a R650,000 purchase at the 2015 CTS Cape Select Yearling Sale, posted a runaway win in Saturday’s Gr3 Starling Stakes over 1400m on Charity Mile Day at Turffontein.
Gavin Lerena had Johan Janse Van Vuuren’s three-year-old handy and shook her up at the 500m mark to go clear. She held a comfortable lead going through the 300m mark, but no amount of tactics or jockeyship would have brought any of her rivals in contention – this daughter of Philanthropist was simply too good for them all.
“She’s A Giver is an exceptionally talented filly,” said Janse van Vuuren about the Avontuur-bred. “It was touch and go whether she was going to run. She spiked a temperature on Friday and I was on the phone to the vets until late.
“When I woke up this morning I was in two minds whether to run her or scratch her. I rung the vet, let it ring three times and hung up. She’s A Giver had eaten her breakfast and she was looking well, so we decided to keep her in.”
She’s A Giver is sure to give plenty more joy to owners Andre Fouche, Mayesh Chetty, Jarryd and Lawrence Wernars and Jaap van de Vendel – she has staked her claim for the fillies classics and on this performance we’ll be seeing a lot more from her this season.
Al Danza, a R350,000 buy from the Cape Premier Yearling Sale n 2015, finished third in the race and also has a good future.
Lerena and Janse Van Vuuren won four races apiece on the big day.
