HORSE CHESTNUT

Arguably the greatest racehorse produced in South Africa, this late, great champion was a Triple Crown winner and Horse of The Year. His top runners include such Gr1 winners as Lucifer’s Stone and Chestnuts N Pearls, as well as high class graded winners Joan Ranger, Banbury, Chestnut’s Rocket and Spanish Chestnut.  Horse Chestnut is also a top class broodmare sire (he features as damsire of champion and Breeders’ Cup bound Smart Call).

Lot 24 – a half brother to five winners, including the Gr1 filly Uptothemoon, this colt is out of former Ladies Mile winner Size Em Up and he is bred on the hugely successful Sadler’s Wells/Habitat cross

Lot 26 – a half sister to no fewer than nine winners (including a stakes performer by Tamburlaine), this filly is out of a stakes placed daughter of top class broodmare sire Goldkeeper and this filly’s first two dams are both black type performers

Lot 37 – a three parts sister to the talented Gold Prospector (he won three of just four outings), this filly is out of a full sister to Gr2 winner Reflective Image and her second dam is a stakes placed daughter of Goldkeeper. This filly’s dam is inbred to the top class broodmare Crimson Saint through Royal Academy and Goldkeeper

Lot 92 – this well bred colt is a half brother to Listed Irridescence Stakes winner Anglet (who has earned over R700 000 in prize money), and this is the same family as former Gr1 SA Fillies Sprint winner Sounds Of Light

Lot 97 – out of a mare with a 100% strike rate of winners to runners, this colt is out of a daughter of champion sire and red hot broodmare sire Captain Al and a stakes placed daughter of National Assembly and this is the family of Gr1 Cape Flying Championship hero Benzol

Lot 121 – a half sister to 5 winners, this filly (inbred to the great mare Special) is out of a half sister to the Gr1 winners Priceless Asset and State Treasure and is from the same family as Gr1 winning fillies Bilateral, Little Miss Magic and champion Tara’s Touch

Lot 145 – out of a three time winning daughter of top speed sire Var, this filly’s first three dams are by Var, Sportsworld and Dancing Champ and this is the same family as high class sprinter Thunder Cat and ill-fated Gr1 performer La Mancha

IDEAL WORLD

One of the best bred sires in the country, this stakes winning son of Kingmambo and Breeders’ Cup winner Banks Hill (a full sister to outstanding sire Dansili) has made an instant impression in South Africa where his first crops have produced the likes of Equus Champion Smart Call, Derby winner Cape Speed and Gr1 filly Persian Rug. Ideal World has also enjoyed success in the sales ring, with his yearlings fetching up to R600k in 2016:

Lot 44 – bred on a similar cross to Met winner Smart Call, this colt is out of a winning daughter of champion sire and broodmare sire Fort Wood and he is from the same family as Hong Kong superstar Able Friend, Gr1 Golden Slipper hero Overreach and local Gr1 winning 2yo Global News

Lot 60 – a half brother to a winner, this colt is from the same family as ill-fated Cape Nursery hero La Mancha, top local speedster Thunder Cat and Gr1 Paddock Stakes winner Badger’s Gift.

IMPERIAL STRIDE

A brilliant racehorse, whose wins included the Gr3 September Stakes and Gr2 Scottish Derby, Imperial Stride is a son of outstanding sire Indian Ridge and is a three parts brother to former Irish 2000 Guineas hero Indian Haven. Also related to sire Count Dubois, Imperial Stride’s better winners include the useful stakes winner Lucky Sam, smart sprinter Eddie Sweat, and the useful Will Pays.

Lot 3 – this colt, who is out of a Gr1 daughter of champion sire and broodmare sire Northern Guest, is a half brother to nine winners including US Gr1 winner and Gr1 Paddock Stakes winner Crimson Palace. His siblings also include the dam of graded winner Changingoftheguard and the dam of useful filly Can Cope and her recent winning half brother Captain Courteous

JAY PEG

One of most successful racehorses ever bred in South Africa, former Equus Champion Jay Peg was a Gr1 winner in three different countries, with his wins including two major international contests – the Gr1 Dubai Duty Free and Gr1 Singapore International Cup.  The champ enjoyed a great season in 2015-2016 with his runners including the graded winners Exit Here (who downed July hero The Conglomerate) and Peggy Jay, as well as Gr1 filly She’s A Dragon and R2 million plus earner Victorious Jay.

Lot 61 – out of a half sister to useful feature race winner Big Cat, this colt’s second dam is a winning daughter of champion sire and broodmare sire Fort Wood and former Gr1 Met winning champion Imperious Sue. The latter’s Gr1 winning daughter Imperious Star fetched R3.2 million at the inaugural CTS Mare And Fillies For Stud Select Sale

JUDPOT

An A P Indy half brother to outstanding sire Kingmambo and French classic winner East Of The Moon, the superbly bred Judpot is firmly entrenched as one of South Africa’s top sires. His first crop produced an Equus Champion as well as Gr1 winner Forest Indigo, while last season his 3yos included Gr1 SA Fillies Classic winner and Equus nominee Juxtapose, and his 2yos the Golden Slipper winning Final Judgement and the exciting Maleficent.

Lot 2 – a half brother to 2 winners, including a stakes placed 2yo, this colt is out of a three time winning half sister to Gr1 sprinter Poly Nation. This is the family of ill-fated champion Mark Anthony and Fillies Guineas winner Rose Bay

Lot 5 – one of the best bred lots on sale, this colt is a half brother to last season’s Gr1 Premier’s Champion Stakes hero and Equus nominee Gunner. Inbred to the great mare Lassie Dear, he is out of Gr3 Diana Stakes runner up Play Nice –a daughter of champion sire Captain Al

Lot 33 – inbred to the great mare Weekend Surprise (dam of A P Indy and Tiger Ridge), this colt is out of a winning half sister to stakes winning 2yo Pure Power and this is the same family as champion sprinters Flobayou and Ethereal Lady among others

Lot 72 – from the same family as A P Indy’s outstanding Gr1 winning son Aptitude, this colt is out of a Gr3 placed winner of six, and his dam is a full sister to multiple Gr1 winner and East Cape champion Copper Parade. Bred on the famed A P Indy/Mr Prospector cross

Lot 105 – out of a four time winning half sister to 3 winners, this colt is from the same family as English classic winner Lucarno and the latter’s top class brothers Flying Officer and Thought Worthy, and the great mare Bourtai

Lot 122 – a half brother to 2 winners, including the stakes placed King Of Indians, this colt’s dam is a winning half sister to 2 black type performers and this is the family of Equus Champion Yorker, who ran a cracking second in the Gr3 Strensall Stakes when making his British debut recently

Lot 150 – out of a stakes placed daughter of champion sire and outstanding broodmare sire Encosta De Lago, this colt (inbred to Seattle Slew like current US star Frosted) is a direct descendant of champion US racemare Waya and this is also the family of Gr1 Prix Vermeille winner Walensee and her outstanding multiple Gr1 winning son Westerner

KAHAL

This son of great sire Machiavellian more than made his mark in South Africa, with Kahal’s 70 odd stakes horses including no fewer than 20 Gr1 performers.  His top offspring include Equus Champion Bold Ellinore, as well as such Gr1 winners as Chocolicious, Desert Links, Noble Heir and Love Struck, with the versatile sire (also responsible for last season’s Oaks winner Witchcraft) throwing Gr1 winners from 1000 to 3200 metres.

Lot 62 – inbred to the mighty sire Danzig (as well as to the great mare Natalma), this colt is out of a four time winning half sister to Gr1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge hero National Spirit and his second dam is a winning daughter of Model Man –damsire of the Kahal sired July runner up Smanjemanje

LOPE DE VEGA

Like his outstanding sire Shamardal, Lope De Vega won both the French 2000 Guineas and Derby. The Ballylinch Stud resident has made an outstanding to his stud career (Lope De Vega stood for a fee of €45 000 in 2016), with his early runners including champion Belardo, French Gr1 winner Jemayel, Italian star Hero Look, and group winners Burnt Sugar, Royal Razalma, and unbeaten 2yo South Seas.

Lot 148 – this filly is a half sister to 3 winners, one of whom won six. From the family of Japan Cup winner Horlicks (dam of a Melbourne Cup winner), her dam is a half sister to champion sprinter and top class Australian sire General Nediym

MAMBO IN SEATTLE

Placed in both the Gr1 Travers Stakes and Gr1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, the blue blooded Mambo In Seattle (his three parts brother Lemon Drop Kid is responsible for 2016 stars Da Big Hoss and Beach Patrol) has made a bright start to his stud career, with his early crops producing dual Gr1 winner Same Jurisdiction (who made a pleasing UK debut recently), and July runners Saratoga Dancer and Mambo Mime as well as Gr3 winner Fortune Fella.

Lot 14 – inbred to the mighty mare Lassie Dear, this colt is a half brother to 2 winners- one of whom won four. From the great Drohsky family, his dam is a winning own sister to a stakes winner and stakes producer and this is the family of Gr1 SA Derby runner up Gothic

Lot 35 – a three parts sister to useful filly Beautiful Shay, this filly is also a half sister to 4 winners, and her dam is a daughter of French Oaks winner Lypharita

Lot 110 – bred on the same Mambo/Captain Al cross as Same Jurisdiction, this colt’s dam is a full sister to the stakes winning sprinter Mainbrace and to the dam of Listed Sophomore Sprint hero Door Of Deception. The family of Gr1 winners Big Brass, Fallon and Stella Maris

Lot 129 – inbred to Mr Prospector, this filly is out of a winning daughter of champion sire Western Winter, and her second dam is a daughter of Sadler’s Wells and Gr1 Yorkshire Oaks winner Key Change. The family of classic winners Kastoria, Kahyasi and Milan

MARCHFIELD

A dual Canadian champion, and classic winner, millionaire Marchfield is a son of dual US champion sire A P Indy, sire of outstanding sires Bernardini, Judpot, Malibu Moon, and Pulpit (sire of Tapit). From the same family as successful sires Boldnesian and Harlan’s Holiday, Marchfield’s small first Canadian crop included the talented Field Of Courage, who was narrowly beaten by subsequent Gr1 Woodward Stakes hero Shaman Ghost when he ran third in the classic Prince Of Wales Stakes as a 3yo.

Lot 41 – this well bred filly is a half sister to 2 winners, including Gr3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery winner Hot Affair. Inbred to the great mare Lassie Dear as well as outstanding sire Roberto, this filly hails from the same family as former Gr1 J&B Met winner La Fabulous

Lot 153 – a half brother to a winner, this colt is out of a half sister to Gr3 King’s Cup hero Pirate’s Gold and this is the same family as R3 million plus earner and Gr1 winner Captain America. This colt is from the legendary Queen Of Light family responsible for such classic winners as Royal Palace, Desert Prince, Fairy Footsteps and Light Cavalry among others

NOORDHOEK FLYER

A dual Guineas winner and one of the best horses of his generation, the blue blooded Noordhoek Flyer is a son of outstanding sire Pivotal, whose 100 plus stakes winners including top class sires Siyouni and Kyllachy. From the same family as leading sire Volksraad, Eclipse winner Mukhadram and champion Halling, Noordhoek Flyer is a prolific sire of winners, with his runners including last season’s smart 2yo filly Felicity Flyer.

Lot 138 – a half brother to 3 winners, this colt is out of a winning daughter of outstanding broodmare sire Elliodor and high class stakes winner Joyous Dancer (herself a daughter of another great broodmare sire in Dancing Champ)

Lot 142 – a half brother to 4 winners (including a stakes horse), this regally bred colt is from the same family as Equus Champion Enaad, dual Australian Gr1 winner and Coolmore sire Pride Of Dubai and top class sire half brothers Invincible Spirit and Kodiac –whose dam, like Noordhoek Flyer’s dam Serra Negra, is by champion miler Kris

Lot 157 – inbred to the great mare Special, this filly is out of a half sister to stakes winning filly Sunset Tripp and she is from the same family as such outstanding Gr1 winning females as Imperious Sue, Imperious Star and Real Princess

ORATORIO

A triple Gr1 winner and European Champion, Oratorio (who is from the same family as champion sires Alydar and Plum Bold) is a proven top class sire, who has headed the Italian Sires List twice. Oratorio, whose offspring have earned over $50 000 000 in stakes, has over 40 stakes winners to his name including the Gr1 winners Banchee, Beethoven, Manawanui, Mourinho and Hong Kong superstar Military Attack. The sire’s first local crop fetched up to R3.2 million.

Lot 20 – a half brother to a five time winner, this colt is out of a winning daughter of Equus Champion and classic winner Monyela –the latter being a three parts sister to legendary Horse Of The Year and successful sire Horse Chestnut

Lot 52 – this well bred colt is a half brother to 4 winners, including globetrotting Gr3 winner Nocturnal Affair –who won races in South Africa, Dubai, Britain and Ireland. Out of a useful stakes placed sister to a stakes winning 2yo, his damsire Centenary is by Alydar -sire of Oratorio’s second dam –and, like Oratorio himself, a descendant of the great mare Real Delight

Lot 156 – a half brother to a winner, this colt (inbred to Danzig) has a second dam who is a half sister to Gr1 winners Al Nitak and The Sheik, and this is the same family as local Horse Of The Year Politician and English classic hero Ragusa among others

PARADE LEADER

This former Gr2 New Orleans Handicap winner shares his sire Kingmambo with such top stallions as King Kamehameha, Lemon Drop Kid and local sire Ideal World. A proven sire, Parade Leader’s top offspring include champion Laverna, as well as Gr1 winners Rudra and Pierre Jourdan, and he is also damsire of Fillies Guineas winner Alexis.

Lot 89 – a full brother to former Equus Champion and Gr1 winner Laverna, this gelding is also a half brother to Gr3 winner Nevvay and nine time winner Spellcaster. Out of Equus Champion and Gr1 winner Enchantress, this gelding is from the family of champions Harry’s Charm and National Currency

Lot 90 – a half brother to 5 winners including Derby placed Stebbins, this colt is out of a winning half brother to Horse Of The Year Yard-Arm and Gr3 winner Donya (dam of last season’s Triple Crown winner Abashiri) and second dam, Fashing, is a former Broodmare Of The Year. Broodmare sire Rakeen hails from the same family as Parade Leader!

PATHFORK

An unbeaten Gr1 winning champion at two (he won the Gr1 National Stakes as did such outstanding sires as Roberto, El Prado and Dubawi), Pathfork (a son of champion sire Distorted Humor) made a cracking start with his first 2yos last season including the unbeaten Gr3 Godolphin Barb winner Red Chesnut Road and the stakes placed Turbo. From the same family as champion sires Northern Guest, Try My Best and Redoute’s Choice.

Lot 27 – a half brother to the useful Bold Var, this colt is out of a Western Winter own sister to a Gr3 2yo and this is the family of Gr1 Cape Flying Championship hero O Caesour as well as champions Enchantress, National Currency and Laverna

Lot 78 – out of a half sister to Gr3 winner Master Of Note, this filly is from the immediate family of current high class performer Smart Mart, as well as Gr1 Cape Derby hero Grande Jete and star filly Joshua’s Princess

PHILANTHROPIST

A Gr3 winning son of the great sire Kris S and from the same family as leading sires Sovereign Dancer, What A Pleasure and National Assembly, Philanthropist is a former leading sire in North America, whose first crop included champions Pender Harbour and Phil’s Dream. The chestnut has made an equally pleasing start in South Africa, with his first crop including Gr1 filly Sail, stakes placed Kenny Trix and debut winners Good To Give, Rockefeller and Tipping Point.

Lot 46 – out of a winning daughter of champion sire Trippi (already broodmare sire of Breeders Cup winner Liam’s Map), this filly’s dam is a half sister to a seven time winner and second dam is a full sister to a Gr3 performer

Lot 75 – out of a winning daughter of Count Dubois (damsire of Gr1 filly Melliflora), this well bred filly’s second dam is a Giant’s Causeway half sister to two European guineas winners and this is the same family as Epsom Derby hero Dante and St Leger winner Sayajirao

Lot 83 – a half brother to 4 winners, this colt is out of a winning half sister to a stakes performer –and to the dam of 3 stakes horses, including Gr2 Camellia Stakes winner Joan Ranger. This is also the family of Gr1 Champions Cup hero African Appeal

Lot 95 – this impeccably bred colt, whose dam was a champion, is a half brother to seven winners (four stakes winners) including Equus Champions and Gr1 winners Let’s Rock ‘N Roll and In The Fast Lane, as well as to the subsequently exported Gr2 Peninsula Handicap hero Light The Lights

Lot 101 – a half sister to 3 winners, this blue blooded filly is out of a daughter of champion sire Giant’s Causeway and Gr1 Golden Slipper winning champion Burst –herself a daughter of former Golden Slipper winner Marauding

QUERARI

A former champion and Gr1 winner, Querari is a son of champion sprinter and top class sire Oasis Dream (also sire of hot young sires Power and Showcasing). He has made a tremendous start to his stud career with the Maine Chance Farms’ resident’s first book including the graded winners Cosmic Light and Kangaroo Jack (along with five other stakes horses) and his second the Gr1 Thekwini Stakes winner Querari Falcon.

Lot 40 – a half brother to 2 winners, this colt (bred like Gr2 winner Cosmic Light) is out of a winning Silvano half sister to 2 black type performers, and this is the outstanding family responsible for Arc hero Suave Dancer, top sires and broodmare sires Habitat and Northfields, and current high class Australian performer Hartnell –who recently won the Gr2 Chelmsford Stakes by 7.75 lengths!

Lot 127 – another bred like Cosmic Light, this colt is a half brother to a multiple winner and is out of a half sister to talented Gr2 filly Real Red. The family of local Gr1 winners Shoe Express, Al Nitak and The Sheik, as well as South African legend Politician and English classic winner Ragusa

Lot 149 – a half brother to a winner, this colt is out of a winning half sister to Gr3 winning 2yo Miss Ethics, and his second dam is a stakes winning daughter of top class broodmare sire Del Sarto

REBEL KING

A former Gr1 winner and champion sprinter, Rebel King has made a name for himself as a sire of high class 2yos and speed horses, with his top performers including Gr3 winner Prince Of Thieves, East Cape champ La Rebel and graded 2yos Dark Force and Rebel To The Fore. Also the sire of Gr3 Winter Classic hero Royal Dreamer.

Lot 125 – a half brother to 3 winners, this colt is out of a three time winning daughter of top class broodmare sire Sportworld. He is from an outstanding family with his relatives including top sprinter Shoe Express (like the colt on sale, by a Danzig line sire), legendary champion Politician and St Leger hero Ragusa

ROCK OF ROCHELLE

Like proven sires Seventh Rock and Mount Nelson, Rock Of Rochelle is a son of Horse Of The Year and hugely successful sire Rock Of Gibraltar. This Gr3 winning speedball also hails from a top notch family with his relatives including the outstanding sires Dynaformer and Brian’s Time, as well as recently deceased Gr1 Suburban Handicap hero Offlee Wild – sire of Breeders’ Cup winners Bayern and She Be Wild.

Lot 81 – this filly is a half sister to 2 winners, including hugely promising 3yo Gimme Six. Out of a winning half sister to Royal Ascot hero Irony and stakes winner Carioca, she is from the same family as 2000 Guineas hero Mystiko as well as the outstanding local broodmare Mystic Spring –dam of champions Bela-Bela and Rabiya

SAIL FROM SEATTLE

This stakes winning three parts brother to major US sire Smart Strike showed huge potential with his early crops. His first crop was responsible for Gr1 winners Elusive Gold and Gulf Storm, as well as millionaire Tommy Gun, while Sail From Seattle’s current crop of 3yos include Gr1 filly Seattle Singer, Pacific Spirit –runner up in the Listed The Sun International Summer Juvenile Stakes, and the useful Wavebreaker.

Lot 88 – inbred to the great sire Mr Prospector, this filly is out of Gr3 Yellowwood Handicap winner Enchanted Kingdom, a daughter of top sire Kahal, and this is the same family as Gr1 Garden Province winner Soft Landing

Lot 102 – a half sister to a winner, this filly is out of a four time winning half sister to Gr1 SA Classic hero Slumdogmillionaire and to Gr2 winner Cycad and her second dam is a Last Tycoon half sister to Australian Gr1 winner and sire Runyon

Lot 124 – out of a mare bred on the same cross as champion Nhlavini, this colt’s second dam is a Gr3 placed half sister to champion Evening Mist and his third dam is Gr1 SA Oaks winner Sea Mist –a direct descendant of legendary broodmare Drohsky

SEVENTH ROCK

A Gr1 winning son of Horse Of The Year Rock Of Gibraltar and champion Ruby Clipper (by Australian champion Rubiton), Seventh Rock got off to a flying start at stud, with his first crops producing Gr1 winner Guiness as well as Equus Champion Seventh Plain, as well as the Algoa Cup hero Stonehenge. His current 3yos include the useful Red Rock and Rocky Valley.

Lot 8 – a half brother to 2 winners, this colt is out of a useful 2yo stakes performer and his second dam is a full sister to Cape feature race winner Model Future

Lot 77 – bred on the same cross as Equus Champion Seventh Plain (and inbred to Danzig), this colt is out of a winning half sister to 3 stakes horses –notably globetrotting champion and successful sire Jay Peg –a Gr1 winner in three different countries

Lot 98 – bred on a similar cross as Gr1 winner Guiness (his damsire is Strike Smartly –a full brother to Smart Strike), this colt is out of a winning half sister to US Gr3 winner Knockadoon and this is the family of recent US Gr3 winner Midnight Cello

Lot 112 – inbred to Danzig (like champion Seventh Plain), this colt is out of a useful 2yo filly by champion sire Exceed And Excel (damsire of current Aus star Astern), and this is the family of champions Busted and Spook Express, former top SA sire Elliodor and Australian Gr1 winner Northern Drake

SILVANO

Last season’s Champion Sire, Trippi is an outstanding sire whose offspring have amassed more than $50 000 000 in prize money. Sire of such stars as five time Gr1 winner Inara, Equus Champion Hammie’s Hooker, Million Dollar hero Illuminator, and US Gr1 winner R Heat Lightning, Trippi is also damsire of Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile hero Liam’s Map as well as the very promising US filly Miss Sunset – who is unbeaten in two starts.
