HERE is Part 1 of a rundown of the stallions represented at this weekend’s Lanzerac CTS Ready To Run Sale, and their progeny on offer at the sale, by SARAH WHITELAW of Sporting Post.

ALADO

One of the best bred sires to retire to stud in South Africa, Alado is a son of the great sire Danzig and dual Gr1 Champion Stakes winner Alborada. The latter is a full sister to Horse Of The Year Albanova and this is the family of such legends as Golden Horn, Shergar, Zarkava and mighty sires Nasrullah and Royal Charger. From limited opportunities, he has sired the smart winners Northern Conquest, Half Moon Hotel and classy filly Adorada.

Lot 66 – a half or full brother to five winners, this colt is a half brother to eight time winner and stakes hero Campo De Santana and his dam herself is a five time winner out of a stakes placed winner of three. The family of top class racemare Poetic among others

ALL TOO HARD

A half brother to undefeated superstar Black Caviar, All Too Hard was himself an outstanding racehorse whose four career Gr1 wins included the Caulfield Guineas and C F Orr Stakes.  All Too Hard, whose first crop are two-year-olds this season, made an instant impression at last season’s yearling sales, where his stock fetched up to AUS600 000 at this year’s Easter Yearling Sale. He has one lot here:

Lot 100 – this magnificently bred colt is out of a Galileo own sister to former South African Horse Of The Year and Gr1 Vodacom Durban July winner Igugu, and his dam is also a half sister to Australian Gr1 performer Honorius. The family of Arc winner Zarkava (dam of this year’s Gr1 Prix du Jockey Club runner up Zarak), and this colt traces back directly to the mighty racemare and producer Mumtaz Mahal

ANIMAL KINGDOM

One of the most versatile champions of recent years, Animal Kingdom not only won both the Gr1 Kentucky Derby (dirt) and Gr1 Dubai World Cup (tapeta) but also finished second to dual Horse Of The Year Wise Dan in the Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Mile (turf). This Blushing Groom line champion (whose first Southern Hemisphere crop race this season) was a superb athlete who earned over $8 000 000.

Lot 80 – out of an Encosta De Lago half sister to Australian Gr2 winner Champagne Harmony, this filly (whose immediate relatives include former Gr1 Melbourne Cup runner up Champagne) is from the magnificent Bourtai family whose members include King George hero Nathaniel, the latter’s classic winning sister Great Heavens and US champion Slew O’Gold

ANTONIUS PIUS

A son of the mighty sire Danzig, former Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Mile runner up Antonius Pius is a former Leading First Crop Sire in South Africa. His runners include such high class performers as graded winners Antonius Du Bois, Belong To Me and My Sanctuary, dual Listed Aquanaut Handicap hero Cool Chardonnay, and East Cape star Yoshie.

Lot 45 – out of a winning mare by emerging broodmare sire Windrush (damsire of Gr1 winner Juxtapose), this colt (who is intensely inbred to the undefeated super sire Danzig) second dam is a half sister to 2 stakes winners including Gr1 Cape Guineas third Walk In Space.

Lot 47 – this colt is out of a winning half sister to multiple Gr1 winner and former Horse Of The Year National Colour, who, like the colt on sale, is by a son of Danzig. This grey colt’s second dam was a top class racemare, whose seven wins included the (now Gr3) Champagne Stakes

ASHAAWES

A son of the great Kingmambo (sire of outstanding sires King Kamehameha and Lemon Drop Kid –as well as hot SA sire Ideal World), Ashaawes has more than made his mark at stud, with the blue blooded sire’s offspring including the versatile graded winner Priceless Jewel, Gr3 Matchem Stakes hero Reim, Dubai Gr1 performer Sanshaawes and top class, recent feature race winner Asstar, to name but a few.

Lot 86 – bred on the famed Kingmambo/Sadler’s Wells cross (also responsible for Equus Champion Smart Call), this well bred filly is out of a daughter of champion sire and multiple champion broodmare sire Fort Wood and dual Gr1 winner Duchess Daba, and, like numerous Gr1 winners the world over, she is inbred to multiple champion sire Danzig

BIARRITZ

A multiple graded stakes winner, whose victories included the Gr2 Gauteng Guineas, millionaire Biarritz hails from the same Gone West male line as current international sire sensations Quality Road and Wootton Bassett. He made the perfect start to his stud career when his very first runner was none other than Listed Irridescence Stakes heroine Anglet.

Lot 7 – this filly is a full sister to the useful Gr3 colt Grandissimo, and her dam is a seven time winning granddaughter of champion 2yo and Gr1 winner Tempest Queen – a full sister to Gr1 Cape Derby runner up and sire Highborn Harry.

Lot 32 – out of a half sister to five winners, including the dam of Gr1 filly Lisa Anne, this colt is from a top class family with his relatives including former Gr1 Champions Cup hero African Appeal and recent Gr2 Camellia Stakes heroine Joan Ranger

Lot 34 – out of a Goldkeeper half sister to a stakes winning 2yo, this colt is from the same family as former Equus Champion Mythical Flight and the latter’s Gr3 winning half sister Mana Mou –the latter having produced last season’s high class 2yo Flying Myth.

Lot 87 – out of a winning daughter of champion sire and red hot broodmare sire Captain Al, this colt is from the great Party Time family –and his relatives include Equus Champions In The Fast Lane and Trademark as well as last season’s local classic winner Heaps Of Fun (who, like the colt on sale, is by a Gone West line sire)

BLACK MINNALOUSHE

Storm Cat’s classic winning son is a proven sire, whose offspring include over 60 stakes performers. The former Irish 2000 Guineas winner’s top runners include Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint hero Dancing In Silks, Triple Crown winner Louis The King, SA Oaks winner Ash Cloud and the Gr1 winning 2yos Arabian Beat, Jokers Wild, Kochka and Gold Onyx.

Lot 1 – out of a full sister to Equus Champion and sire Argonaut, this filly’s dam is also a half or full sister to four other stakes winners, including Gr1 SA Fillies Guineas winner Finest View

Lot 69 – out of a half sister to 2 stakes horses, including Gr1 performer Rebel Knight, this colt’s second dam is Gr1 SA Fillies Guineas runner up Darby Game. The latter is by Elliodor –who is also broodmare sire of Black Minnaloushe’s Equus Champion son Kochka

BOLD SILVANO

A former Equus Champion and Durban July winner, Bold Silvano made a stunning Dubai debut when he won the Gr3 Al Maktoum Challenge (Round 2) defeating such world class performers as Al Shemali, Gitano Hernando and Crowded House. Retired to stud, the son of champion sire Silvano has made a pleasing start to his stud career, with his first 2yo winners last season including the talented Bold Rex and debut winner Besotted.

Lot 15 – a full brother to useful winner Boldly Respectable, this colt is bred on the hugely successful Silvano/Blushing Groom cross, which has produced the likes of Martial Eagle and Heavy Metal. This colt’s second dam is a winning daughter of top class broodmare sire Model Man and former Oaks heroine Respectable

Lot 106 – a half brother to 2 winners, this colt is out of a winning Goldkeeper half sister to Gr1 Horse Chestnut Stakes winner Captain America and Gr3 winner Aquitaine. The latter is by Al Mufti –who is also broodmare sire of Bold Silvano himself. This is the great Queen Of Light family.

Lot 115 – this filly is out of a stakes placed winner of four, whose half sister is Gr3 winner Oochee Agent. The family of Gr2 winner Soviet Rising –like the filly on offer, a male line descendant of Triple Crown winner Nijinsky II

Lot 154 – a half sister to a winner, this filly is out of a mare who won four and is from the same family as dual Gr1 winner and Equus Award nominee of last season, Rabada

BYWORD

A superb athlete, and French champion, Byword’s seven victories included the Gr1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, in which he accounted for no fewer than seven individual Gr1 winners. Also second in the Gr1 Prix d’Ispahan to triple Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Goldikova, Byword is from an outstanding family and is a half brother to multiple Gr1 winner Proviso. His first crop sold up to R2 000 000 last season.

Lot 71 – this filly, whose first three dams are by National Assembl, Gulch and A P Indy, gained a handsome update to her family when relative Union Strike won the recent Gr1 Del Debutante Stakes. Union Strike’s third dam is Court Hostess –the fourth dam of this filly on offer! This is also the family of European champions Mark Of Esteem and Mashaallah as well as legendary racemare Gallorette

CAPTAIN AL

A former Champion Sire, Captain Al reeled off a staggering eighth consecutive 2yo sires title last season. The mighty son of Al Mufti completely dominated South Africa’s top 2yo contests in 2015-2016, with his juveniles including the Equus Champions Always In Charge and Cloth Of Cloud, as well as undefeated Gr1 winner The Secret Is Out. Captain Al’s 30 plus Gr1 winners also include such champions as All Is Secret and Captain Of All, Met hero Hill Fifty Four and star sprinter Carry On Alice.

Lot 74 – this colt, a half brother to Gr3 filly Can Cope, is a full brother to the smart recent winner Captain Courteous. Bred on the same Captain Al/Fort Wood cross as Gr1 winner Captain America, this colt’s three time winning dam is a half sister to US Gr1 winner Crimson Palace and his second dam is a Gr1 daughter of the great broodmare sire Northern Guest.

Lot 128 – a half or full brother to 4 winners, this well bred colt is out of an Elusive Quality half brother to European classic winners, and his second dam is a Sadler’s Wells half sister to French 1000 Guineas runner up Firth of Lorne (herself a classic producer).

Lot 131 – a half/full brother to five winners, this colt is out of a three parts sister to Gr2 winning sprinter Casino Queen and stakes winner Toronto Star, and half brother to Gr2 Woolavington Cup hero Jungle Earl

CHOISIR

An outstanding sprinter, Choisir made history when he won both the Gr2 King’s Stand Stakes and Gr1 Golden Jubilee Stakes in the same week. A proven top class sire (he has more than 70 stakes winners to his credit including Gr1 winners Starspangledbanner, Olympic Glory and Obviously), Choisir has been enjoying a great run of success lately with recent winners including Gr3 winning British 2yo The Last Lion and high class Australian 3yo Divine Prophet.

Lot 39 – this well bred colt is out of a four time winning half sister to Australian stakes winner Vezalay and is from the family of New Zealand Gr1 winner Albany Reunion and outstanding miler Northjet, as well as 1000 Guineas heroine Queenpot

COUNT DUBOIS

A Gr1 winning 2yo himself, and half brother to Irish 2000 Guineas winner Indian Haven, Count Dubois is a former Equus Outstanding Stallion and ranks as one of South Africa’s most consistent sires. His top offspring include such Equus Champions as Asylum Seeker and French Navy, as well as the Gr1 winners Zaitoon and Zeeno, while another top class runner by Count Dubois is the Team Valor owned Madame Dubois – who has since been exported overseas.

Lot 54 – bred on the same Count Dubois/Jet Master cross as multiple Gr3 winner Madame Dubois, this filly’s second dam is a half sister to Gr2 Dingaans hero Petros and this is also the family of the great Variety Club – a dual Horse Of The Year in South Africa

Lot 85 – out of a winning Oasis Dream half sister to ill-fated millionaire Zambezi River, this blue blooded filly is a direct descendant of Epsom Oaks winner Snow Bride –herself dam of unbeaten Derby/Arc winner Lammtarra. This is also the family of fellow English Derby hero Pour Moi, the classic winning siblings Hector Protector, Bosra Sham and Shanghai as well as Gr1 winning 2yo Ultra

CRUSADE

Himself winner of the prestigious Gr1 Middle Park Stakes at two (like current sire sensations Dark Angel and Oasis Dream), Crusade is a half brother to one of the world’s leading fillies this year Seventh Heaven, a winner of both the Gr1 Irish Oaks and Gr1 Yorkshire Oaks in 2016. Crusade, whose first crop are now, proved popular at yearling sales around the country last season.

Lot 50 – this blue blooded colt is out of Gr3 winner Aquitaine –a three parts sister to Gr1 Horse Chestnut Stakes hero and R3 000 000 plus earner Captain America. This is the outstanding Queen Of Light family responsible for such outstanding performers as Desert Prince, Greinton and Royal Palace – to name a few

DELAGO DELUXE

A former Equus Champion who is now standing at stud in Australia, Delago Deluxe was a Gr1 winner at both two and three. He is one of 26 Gr1 winners for former Australian champion sire Encosta De Lago, whose other sire sons include ill-fated star stallion Northern Meteor and shares his broodmare sire Flying Spur with top class Aussie sire Sebring. Delago Deluxe’s first yearlings proved extremely popular in Australia last season – his ten yearlings averaged more than 15 times his stud fee at the Magic Millions Sale!

Lot 59 – a half brother to nine winners (including an 11 time winner in Australia), this colt is out of a Scenic half brother to Gr1 winner Bollinger (herself dam of top class US colt Friesan Fire). His second dam is champion 2yo and Golden Slipper winner Bint Marscay (by champion sire Marscay) and this colt is inbred, through siblings Sadler’s Wells and Fairy King, to Northern Dancer and Fairy Bridge

DYNASTY

This former Horse Of The Year, and sire of a R5.2 million yearling, has long been regarded as one of the country’s elite stallions. His sons include three who have been named Horse Of The Year (all three of whom are now standing at stud), as well as such Gr1 winners / champions as Act Of War, Ancestral Fore, Beach Beauty, Bela-Bela, Jackson, and last season’s Gr1 Investec Cape Derby hero It’s My Turn.

Lot 51 – this well related filly is out of a full sister to graded stakes winning siblings Rushing Wind and Nordic Breeze, and half sister to seven time stakes winner and Gr2 performer Ice Wine. Also the family of ill-fated Gr1 Fillies Guineas winner Yquem.

Lot 94 – out of a Gr3 Jet Master half sister to feature race hero Road To Reason, this well bred filly is from the same family as the Gr1 winning siblings Counter Action, Divine Fashion and Perfect Order, as well as recent Gr2 Merchants hero Triptique

Lot 111 – from one of the best families in the stud book, this colt is a half brother to five winners (including stakes winner Rosinante) as well as to the dams of current high class black type performers Dark Force and Mambonick. His dam is a four time winning half sister to Gr2 winner Grey Arrow and this is the family of champion sire Zabeel, Arc winners Carnegie and Detroit and Irish 2000 Guineas hero Roderic O’Connor.

Lot 135 – one of the best bred colts on sale, he is a half brother to none other than Equus Champion, dual international Gr1 winner and successful local sire Jay Peg, as well as to Gr3 winning sprinter Cyber Case and stakes placed winner of six Cabernet Kid. He is from the same family as millionaire Whiteline Fever and Equus Champion Kochka, as well as numerous other high class stakes winners

ELUSIVE FORT

Like mighty sire Dynasty, Elusive Fort is a champion son of the great sire Fort Wood. A member of the magnificent Sadler’s Wells male line, this triple Gr1 winner (whose close relative Elusive Silva lifted a Derby last season) has made a superb start to his stud career, with his first crops producing Gr1 winners Siren’s Call and Lauderdale, and his current 3yos including the exciting fillies Smokey Affair and Safe Harbour.

Lot 30 – a half or full brother to 3 winners, this colt is out of a Gr3 performer who won six times and this is the family of Gr1 SA Nursery winner Forest Trogon.

Lot 49 – bred on the same cross as Elusive Fort’s stakes winning son Ernie, this filly is out of a winning daughter of champion sire Captain Al and hails from the same family as Gr1 Garden Province Stakes winner Dynamite Lady.

Lot 73 – a half sister to no fewer than eight winners (including the very decent Spirit Of Hamilton), this filly is out of a stakes placed winner of three and hails from the same family as ill-fated Cape Derby hero Corning Touch and former Horse Of The Year National Colour

EXCELEBRATION

A son of champion sire, and emerging sire of sires, Exceed And Excel, Excelebration was a world class racehorse and classic winner, whose three Gr1 victories included the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot. Well known for his battles with the peerless champion Frankel, Excelebration won or placed in 13 of his 15 outings and earned over £1 000 000 in stakes. The Danehill grandson, who stands at Coolmore, has made a pleasing start with his first Northern Hemisphere 2yos this year including Gr3 performer Pellucid and debut winners Natalie Express and Tara Celeb.

Lot 104 – a half brother to 2 winners, including a stakes placed winner of five, this colt is out of a winning half sister to a Gr3 winning 2yo and is out of a full sister to 10 time stakes winner Del Toro. The family of Gr1 winning 2yo Pillaging

GIMMETHEGREENLIGHT

This former Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner made a scintillating start to his stud career, and ended 2015-2016 as South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire.  Gimmethegreenlight’s first crop includes Gr1 Premier’s Champion Stakes winner Gunner and undefeated Gr2 winner Hack Green, the very promising winners Legend, Gimme Six and the undefeated Green Lantern.

Lot 6 – a half sister to a useful winner, this filly (bred like Gimme’s Hack Green) is out of a Fort Wood half sister to smart Gr3 performer Isobar. Her second dam is a speedy stakes placed daughter of champion sire Western Winter and this is the same family as November Handicap hero Likeithot.

Lot 16 – out of a winning Jet Master half sister to a six time winner (and intensely inbred to breed shaping sire Halo), this filly is from the same family as ill-fated Cape Guineas winner Face North, Gr1 J&B Met star Polo Classic and former champion Quarrytown.

Lot 18 – a half sister to a winner, this filly is out of a winning daughter of triple champion sire Western Winter and the Gr1 winning mare Divided Loyalty and this is the same family as international Gr1 winning siblings Irridescence and Perfect Promise.

Lot 28 – out of a mare by Strike Smartly (also damsire of Gr1 winner Guiness), this colt’s second dam is a daughter of outstanding broodmare sire Elliodor and multiple champion and Gr1 winner Dancing Danzig and this is the mighty Drohsky family.

Lot 31 – a half brother to 2 winners, this colt is out of a useful Oaks placed half sister to the stakes winning 2yo Triumphant Surge and this is the same family as champion sprinter Mythical Flight and last season’s stakes winning 2yo Flying Myth.

Lot 79 – another closely inbred to Halo, this colt is a half brother to a pair of winners and is out of a half sister to former Gr1 winning speedster – Scarena

Lot 91 – bred on the hugely successful More Than Ready/Danehill cross, this well bred filly is out of a winning Rock Of Gibraltar half sister to a stakes winner who ran third in the Gr1 New Zealand Derby and this is the same family as legendary sire Zabeel and champions Durtal, Detroit and Carnegie

Lot 123 – this well bred filly is out of a Gr1 placed stakes winner, who is a half sister to multiple stakes winner Lucky Sam. Her fourth dam is US champion, and Gr1 winner, Heavenly Cause-whose stakes winning son Two Punch sired US champion and successful sire Smoke Glacken

Lot 133 – this filly is bred to be quick –she is out of a Gr3 2yo by top sprinter and sire Var and hails from the immediate family of former Champion Sprinter Mythical Flight, among others

Lot 141 – bred on the same cross as Gr1 winner and Equus nominee Gunner, this colt is a half brother to the useful performer Genial, and his dam is a half sister to the very useful Gr2 filly London

GITANO HERNANDO

From the same male line as champion sire Silvano, Gitano Hernando was, like Silvano, an outstandin globetrotting Gr1 winner. His victories included both the Gr1 Goodwood Stakes and Gr1 Singapore International Cup, and the handsome chestnut earned over $2 000 000 in prize money. Gitano Hernando’s first 2yos made a pleasing start last season and include the smart stakes filly Whose That Girl.

Lot 9 – this well bred colt is out of Gr3 Diana Stakes winner Promises To Keep (by emerging broodmare sire Windrush) –a half sister to the talented Gr2 performer Speed Rocket and this is the famed Drohsky family

Lot 55 – a half sister to 3 winners, this filly is out of a four time winning three parts sister to 10 time Gr3 winning sprinter Sharp Design, and her second dam is seven Gr3 winning sprinter Sharp Ledge. The family of Gr1 Majorca Stakes winner Sarabande and Selangor Cup winner De Kock

GO DEPUTY

A Gr1 winning millionaire, Go Deputy is a son of dual US champion sire Deputy Minister and is from the same family as the great breed shaping sire Fappiano. Go Deputy is a proven top class sire, whose offspring include the Triple Crown winning Abashiri, as well as such high class graded stakes winners as Changingoftheguard, Current Event, Flying Ice and Pessoa, as well as the top class multiple stakes winner Deputy Ryder and Adobe Pink.

Lot 70 – this regally bred gelding (a three parts brother to Adobe Pink) is a half brother to five winners including recent winner and Gr3 performer Mr Roy. His second dam is the late, great mare Nacarat – dam of Gr1 winners Nania and Red Ray as well as Gr2 winner Brutal Force – who was bought back for a then record price of R4.5 million at the 2013 Ready To Run Sale.

Lot 96 – out of a three time winning daughter of Western Winter, this filly is a three parts sister to Gr3 winner Current Event and is also very closely related to Go Deputy’s dual Gr1 winner and Triple Crown winning son Abashiri, and her dam is a three parts sister to former Horse Of The Year Yard-Arm.

Lot 118 – out of a four time winning Western Winter half sister to stakes winning 2yo Juan Two Three as well as the very talented filly Counter Ridge, this filly is from the same family as former Equus Champion Filly National Bay

GREAT BRITAIN

An Al Quoz Sprint winning full brother to the top sire Cape Cross (sire of Sea The Stars, Golden Horn, Ouija Board etc), Great Britain is a son of the hugely successful sire of sires Green Desert.  From limited opportunities, this regally bred sire has come up with a number of winners including Gr1 2yo Mystical Twilight and last season’s Gr2 Umkhomazi Stakes runner up Wrecking Ball.

Lot 19 – this well bred colt is a half brother to 4 winners including Gr1 SA Oaks winner Pine Princess and 12 time winner Stone Pine. He is from an exceptional family with his relatives including champion fillies Dark Mirage and Indian Skimmer and top sprinter and Gr1 sire Bluebird

Lot 56 – this well related filly is a half sister to four winners including the classy filly Harvard Crimson –who was recently was narrowly beaten into second in the Listed Jockey Club Stakes. She is out of a four time winning half sister to Gr2 winner Laurasian Express

GREYS INN

A former Durban July winner and Equus Champion himself, Greys Inn is the sire of reigning Horse Of The Year and four time Gr1 winner Legal Eagle. A son of legendary sire Zabeel, Greys Inn (whose half sister is the dam of champion Smart Call) is a proven sire whose other notable performers include Gr1 winners King Of Pain and Royal Bencher and Graded winners Forries Waltz and Chekilli.

Lot 36 – out of a winning daughter of champion sire/broodmare sire Fort Wood, this filly’s dam is a sister in blood to legendary Horse Of The Year Horse Chestnut (Fort Wood) and former Equus Champion Monyela (Fort Wood). This is also the family of recent graded winners Cape Speed and Off The Mark

Lot 117 – out of a winning daughter of Fort Wood and SA Oaks winner Idle Fancy (by former champion sire Badger Land), this filly is from the family of 1000 Guineas winner Glad Rags II, classic winner and hot young sire Union Rags and popular young Coolmore sire Declaration Of War

Lot 130 – bred on the same Greys Inn/National Emblem cross as Legal Eagle, this colt’s winning dam is a half sister to a five time winner and from the family of graded winners Casino Queen and Jungle Earl

Lot 144 – a half sister to stakes winning 2yo Kitti Cat, this filly is from one of the truly great families –her relatives include outstanding broodmare Hasili (dam of champion sire Dansili and second dam of successful SA sire Ideal World), Leroidesanimaux (sire of Animal Kingdom) and 2000 Guineas winner Gleneagles, as well as mighty champion Giant’s Causeway.
