The dramatic decline of the rand means the ball is firmly in the court of overseas buyers for this week’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale in Cape Town.

The sale will be held on Thursday and Friday (5pm start both days) at the International Convention Centre.

There was an increase in overseas buyers last year, but if European bloodstock agents are on the ball they will realise there’s never been a better opportunity to purchase quality bloodstock at cheap prices when converted to pounds or euros.

We have proved we can produce horses who can take on the best in the world – Variety Club is recent proof of that.

The big action should come on Thursday when some well-related youngsters come under the hammer of Andrew Miller and John O’Kelly.

If Maine Chance Farms boss, Dr Andreas Jacobs, is nervous about this week, it would be no surprise. The German-born industrialist has Silver Mountain running for him in Saturday’s CTS Million Dollar race and on Thursday he offers a yearling by champion sire, Captain Al, out of a full-sister to his stallion, Silvano.

John O’Kelly can expect some big bids for this yearling who has been named Shining Blade. His half-brother, Solapur, won races in both Germany and Switzerland.

The one yearling likely to challenge Shining Blade as the day’s (and possibly overall) sale topper is a Dynasty colt from Highlands Farm Stud out of the American mare, Our Table Mountain. The colt is a half-brother to Silver Mountain and also to Mike Bass’ temperamental, but useful, performer Helderberg Blue. Andrew Miller will be delighted to be selling this lot.

Another of Dynasty’s sons likely to get the catalogues waving is another Maine Chance offering out of the mare, My Lady Bluff. This colt is a half-brother to Hard Day’s Night who represents Joey Ramsden’s stable in Saturday’s big CTS race.

Former trainer Stan Elley did exceptionally well with Punta Arenas so he’s sure to run his expert eye over his full-brother, Palo Alto.

This is another well-bred colt consigned by Maine Chance which is offering a quality draft of 25 yearlings.

On Thursday Drakenstein Stud will be offering a half-brother by Silvano to Halve The Deficit whom Sean Tarry saddled to seven wins including the Grade 2 Colorado King Stakes. The champion trainer will be eager to have a look at this bay colt.

The progeny of Oratorio make their SA debut at this sale and – on Friday – Avontuur Farm will be offering a colt who is a half-brother to the seven-time winner, Nocturnal Affair.

Also on Friday, Highlands will be offering the fifth produce of Durban July winner, Dancer’s Daughter. This colt, by Silvano, has been aptly named, Born To Perform. Highlands will be hoping he does just that as the mare’s previous offspring haven’t set the tracks alight.

Lazer Star is one of the most popular performers on the Highveld and The Alchemy have consigned her half-sister by Antonius Pius. She was an early foal, being born at the end of August.

Towards the end of proceedings on Friday night, Highlands will be offering a half-sister (by Oratorio) to Soft Falling Rain.

Soft Falling Rain enjoyed a great career under Mike de Kock – he was Equus Champion Two Year-Old colt in 2011-12 and Champion Three Year-Old Miler in UAE in 2012-13.
