Three CTS graduates were impressive in winning races at Turffontein on Saturday and all have feature claims in the months ahead.

Sean Tarry’s filly Desert Rhythm bounced back to the winner’s enclosure with a powerful MR89 win over 1450m in a competitive field, her first success since landing the Gr2 Golden Slipper in 2017.

Desert Rhythm, by Mambo In Seattle, was a R200,000 buy from Nutfield Stud for owner Chris van Niekerk at the 2016 CTS Cape Premier Yearling Sale, the same venue at which Penny From Heaven was knocked down for R600,000 to a syndicate of owners including Mohammed Khaleel and JJ van der Linden, and sent to Mike de Kock.

Penny From Heaven, a daughter of Silvano bred by Maine Chance, won a MR72 Handicap over 1600m in the hands of apprentice Luke Ferraris and assistant trainer Mathew de Kock said: “There are quite a few owners who pay the bills for Penny From Heaven and she’s finally done them proud. She was battling along and we were thinking giving up on her, but she’s done very well recently, she’s matured and there could be more to come," Mathew said.

Trainer Chris Erasmus saddled Come The Day to his third win this season when he picked off a MR87 Handicap over 2000m.

“Come The Day still has lots of maturing to do so I don’t want to push him too hard too soon,” Erasmus said. “We’ll take him for a canter Tuesday morning to see how he came out of Saturday’s race and then we’ll make a decision on what to do with him next.  I threw him in the deep end Saturday and he came through, it was very pleasing to see.”

“The Charity Mile is too short for him, but there is a suitable 1800m handicap coming up, which will be a good prep into a Gr3 feature.”

Come The Day, by Await The Dawn from Summerhill Stud, has already recovered his R160,000 CTS Ready To Run purchase price and more for owners, Red Jack Trading.
