Peter De Beyer has been an owner-breeder for 25 years and he loves both exciting aspects of the industry equally.

De Beyer describes his Black Swan Stud in Robertson as a ‘boutique stud’ with a 73% strike rate of winners to foals, almost unparalleled in the country, since 2013/14. De Beyer breeds with his best race mares and mates selectively to ensure consistent success.

De Beyer has bred the likes of Sun Met runner-up Last Winter and double-leg Triple Tiara winner Siren’s Call, both unluckily pipped in their respective deciding contests.

“We prescribe to quality, not quantity,” says De Beyer, who is suitably impressed by his 2021 Cape Premier Sale draft, eight fillies prepared by the stud’s Walter Cowe.

“I am a fan of Trippi and his son Gold Standard has sired some beautiful foals,” De Beyer said in reference to Lots 27 and 86.

Lot 27 is a chestnut filly from Beautiful Noise (Centenary), a strong, correct specimen who walks well. “I like Centenary mares, and Beautiful Noise has given us four multiple winners. This filly has a good, solid pedigree.”

Lot 86 is a very strong bay from the young, promising mare Ideal Lady (Ideal World), whose first foal I’m A Lady has already won a race. This, her third offspring, traces back to the superbly performed international mare Serena and the sire, Broadway Flyer. “She’s a nice sized yearling from the close family of Listed winner Helen’s Ideal, one of Cape Town’s most popular racers at present.”

A three-parts sibling to the now stallion Last Winter will pass through the ring as Lot 60, and she’s De Beyer’s top choice among the Black Swan yearlings.

“She was born from our prized mare Field Flower (Silvano), the Gr1 winner who has also produced the decent performer Fynbos (Elusive Fort) and we can’t wait to see how this nick with What A Winter works out. “She’s beautiful, stands over ground, well topped with a strong shoulder. An absolute must-see for buyers!”

Next up, Lot 76, a daughter from the proven cross of Querari and Silvano. She’s a bay from the lovely mare GoldandSilver (Silvano), a four-time winner, and stamped with Querari class.  “Her half-brother Treasure Hunt (Elusive Fort), has had two outings in Juvenile Plates against winners, two very good runs over 1000m, far too sharp, and against the top class High Hosannah and Ambiorex respectively. This is Goldandsilver’s third foal and we’re excited about her.”

Lot 77 is a filly by Elusive Fort from Golden Dawn (Goldmark), the two-time winning dam (incl Listed win) herself a half-sister to Gr1 winner Chestnut’s N Pearls. She hails from an extended damline full of black type and De Beyer said: “She’s a lovely, athletic foal with a nice temperament, by a hot sire who has the likes of top class Kommetdieding and Catchtwentytwo among the country’s best at the moment. Elusive Fort’s offspring are versatile, like he was, winning over sprints and from 1400m to 2450m.”

Lot 98 is another by Elusive Fort, this one has her sire’s darker bay coat and was bred from Knysna Lagoon (Kabool), who has thrown a decent stayer in Parade March (Marchfield), but has been difficult to get in foal. “I have a soft sport for Knysna Lagoon, and this yearling walks well, she’ll be a nice value buy for anyone.”

Lot 178 is another not to be missed. By up-and-coming star Vercingetorix from Sylvie, by DuPont, whose first runner is six-time winner Sarah, Paul Peter’s speedy ace. This one hails from the powerful Normandy family of Bravura and Winter Solstice, and De Beyer noted: “Sylvie is a small mare, I bought her from Veronica Foulkes and judged on Sarah she will be a potent broodmare.  This is a smart specimen, a filly that buyers just have to come and see!”

Lastly Lot 181, a correct, well-sized, athletic half-sister to Helen’s Ideal, by Duke Of Marmalade from Tequila Blush, the three-parts sister by Fort Wood to Flame Tree.

“We sent Tequila Blush to Marchfield twice after she foaled down with Helen’s Ideal (Ideal World) and we’re expecting this chestnut to be from the top drawer, De Beyer said.”
