Trainer Gavin van Zyl is excited about the future prospects of his CTS graduate Stream Ahead, who won Sunday’s Listed KZN Guineas Trial over 1600m on turf at Greyville.

On this win, the Highlands-bred is certain to qualify for the CTS Mile on Sun Met Day in 2019 and Van Zyl commented: “I spoke to jockey Craig Zackey after the race and he believes Stream Ahead is a colt that has graded quality, he gave him a good feel.

“Stream Ahead is still inexperienced, he runs around a bit and we’ll probably have to consider gelding him at some point, but that’s still up in the air. He was impressive in winning, because if you watch the replay you’ll see that he loses his position around the bend when the favourite pushed them in going around runners.

“Craig said Stream Ahead lost a couple of lengths, had to get his momentum back and start again when the others were in full cry. He fought back well and there was merit in this win!”

Stream Ahead was bought for R275,000 at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale of 2017 and Van Zyl said: “That sale had an average of just under R700,000 per foal so I was happy to pay R275,000 for this one because I liked him a lot and considering what he’s done so far he’s beginning to look like a bargain.

Stream Ahead is by Gimmethegreenlight from Cool River, by Western Winter, and he’s earned R205,000 with two wins and three places for Team G Racing, Errol Budlender and Kovilan Padayachee.
