Seeking The Stars (nearest camera) held on well to win the 2021 Green Point Stakes.

Talented miler Seeking The Stars (8-1) posted his sixth win from 13 starts with a perfect front-running display in Saturday’s G2 R200 000 WSB Club Privé Gr2 Green Point Stakes over 1600m at Kenilworth.

Anton Marcus, knowing he had the fittest horse in the race under him, produced a fine tactical ride, sending his mount out to dictate by three lengths, easing the pace around the bend and then extending his advantage to five lengths at about the 700m marker.

The other jockeys in the race could see what Marcus was doing as they swung for home down the long summer course straight, with both Richard Fourie (Rainbow Bridge) and Grant van Niekerk (Linebacker), shaking their mounts up early in pursuit of Seeking The Stars. But the specialist miler was in full cry, and although the chasing pair threw out strong late challenges, he held them off well.

The four-year-old colt kicked again late to hold off of dual Met winner Rainbow Bridge by 0,40 lengths in a time of 99,85 secs. Linebacker finished 0,75 lengths away in third, with Jet Dark and Captain Fontane bringing up the rear in a small field.

Trainer Vaughan Marshall acknowledged that Seeking The Stars’ fitness won the day and that he would not be trying to take the same trio on in the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate.

“It was a superb ride from Anton Marcus in a race that suited him. I think we will put Seeking The Stars away and freshen him up for the Diadem Stakes in February. We still aren’t sure what his best trip is, but the 1200m could suit him.”

Seeking The Stars, who races in the Rikesh Sewgoolam silks, was bred by Klawervlei Stud and was another smart feature winner on the afternoon for Vercingetorix (Silvano). He is out of the Count Dubois mare Schism, who won up to 2200m.

Seeking The Stars was a R1 million buy for Sewgoolam at the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, and has banked R1 153 875.
