Rivarine, the first foal of champion race mare River Jetez, took 34 runs to win a Gr1 race, but when he finally did on Saturday it was a sweet moment all the same for everyone from his breeders Avontuur Stud and Cedric and Barbara Amm, CTS, owners Melandie Taljaardt and Sharon Azzie and trainers Mike and Adam Azzie.

Six-year-old Rivarine, by VAR, added a seventh career victory to his resume when he beat Russet Air, Chimichuri Run and Mr Flood in the Gr1 Computaform Sprint at Turffontein.

Rivarine had to settle for second place behind Mr Flood in his only post-lockdown run three weeks ago, but turned the tables in exceptional style, recording a winning time of 56.72 seconds.

“We had a plan, we stuck to the plan and it worked out perfectly for us,” said jockey Devin Habib, who kept his calm when Rivarine jumped out slow. They took some cover behind Chimichuri Run, managed to keep up with the fast early pace and then came to the standside rail for his run.

“I bided my time, I waited,” said Habib, who rode a well-timed and confident race.

Adam Azzie said that the track conditions suited Rivarine to a tee, as he doesn’t like a soft or wet track. He prefers a very dry surface as he likes to come off the pace.

“He’s improving as he is maturing and he’s sorted his niggles out himself,” said Azzie.

Rivarine was a R600,000 buy from the Cape Premier Yearling Sale in 2015. His full-sister, Delta Queen, will be one of the favourites for next Saturday’s Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship. He has won R1,224-million so far
