Port Elizabeth trainer Yvette Bremner is very good at raiding with runners away from her home base, proven recently when she won the Gr3 Graham Beck Stakes at Turffontein with outsider National Park.

Bremner again showed her ability to win features outside of the Bay when the R90,000 CTS March 2016 Yearling Sale purchase Princess Rebel (Lyle Hewitson) outpaced her opposition in the Grade 2 Southern Cross Stakes over 1000m.

The diminutive Rebel King filly has regularly run her home sprint competitors off their feet, but went off relatively unfancied at 9-1, following the Capetonians’ belief that she’d be outclassed in stronger company.

Princess Rebel quickly went a couple of lengths clear and kept daylight between herself and the field throughout to win by 2.25 lengths. Candice Bass-Robinson’s Nous Voila chased her all along but made little impression, while another CTS graduate Freedom Charter ran on  for third.

Bremner’s assistant trainer Carl Hewitson, father of Lyle, said afterwards that Princess Rebel was an out-and-out 1000m filly and that she would now return to PE. She may be sent back to take on the colts in the Grade 1 Cape Flying Championship on Sun Met day.

Hewitson congratulated Bremner and owner Hedley McGrath, who are on holiday in Europe.
