Three times Zimbabwean champion trainer Paul Matchett has made his mark over the last 15 years in South Africa. He enjoyed a spectacular afternoon at Turffontein on Saturday with three Listed feature winners, including two bargain buys from CTS Sales.

Matchett’s CTS graduate Basadi Faith (R45,000 2018 CTS April Yearling Sale), raced home 4.75-lengths clear of Gin Fizz in the hands of Devin Habib to win the Ruffian Stakes over 1000m.

Considering her world-class pedigree, Basadi Faith’s worth in relation to her purchase price would have increased at least twenty-fold after this win.

Two-year-old Basadi Faith, by Master Of My Fate, comes from the immediate family of champion broodmare National Colour and her offspring includes 2018 Equus Champion Two-Year-Old Mustaaqeem and the accomplished Rafeef, now a stallion.

Basadi Faith is owned by showjumper Juanita van der Merwe, a friend of Matchett’s long-time patron Joe Abreu, and new to racing. “She’s a quality filly, her time was almost a second faster than the time clocked in the colt’s race. She’ll probably be favourite for the Fillies Nursery now,” said Matchett.

Three-year old See You Tyger won the Bauhinia Handicap with a powerful late run for jockey Jarryd Penny. She was a R30,000 purchase from the 2017 CTS March Sale, where 12 yearlings by the now deceased Where’s That Tiger went under the hammer and Matchett appears to have picked perhaps the best among them.

“See You Tiger was a smart investment,” said Matchett of the filly, who has won R286,000 with three wins from 12 starts for partners Clive vd Mescht, Jacques Hugo, Les Taylor and Sam van Rensburg.
