When asked for a pointer to buying yearlings at various sales grounds, most trainers will tell you they look for “good walkers”.

If this is indeed so, they will enjoy a visit to Bennie Marais’ Klipdrif Stud stand at the Cape Town International Convention Centre this week. Marais has described all five of his entries to CPYS 2002 as exactly that  -  “good walkers”.

To the eyes of the untrained, one walking horse looks much the same as the next, but the experts can tell you what to look for. The walk, and a number of other factors, contribute to the overall impression of a yearling and Marais gave a few brief notes on his consignment.

Lot 11 is Kiss and Rain, a colt by What A Winter from Kiss and Ride, by Jallad. The dam is a sibling to of one of Varsfontein’s top families (which includes the recent Gr1 Guineas winner Kilindini) and Marais commented: “He’s a good size, with strong hind legs, a scopy individual.”

Crimson Causeway (Lot 81) is by Gimmethegreenlight from the Giant’s Causeway mare Scarlet Causeway, with impressive Australian black type in her pedigree. “She’s nice, a racy type,” Marais said.

The same comment was given for Twice Over’s daughter Repeat Performance (Lot 94),  a dark bay horse like her sire and from a Jet Master mare who has delivered four winners from  four foals to race.

Lot 166 is another Twice Over from a Jet Master mare. This one is a colt named Double Superlative, the first foal of the Graded-placed five-time winner Come Fly With Me. “I like the Twice Over/Jet Master mating. This is a good-sized horse with substance,” said Marais.

Lot 167 is a Visionaire from a Listed four-time winner Comtesse Du Bois (Count Du Bois), who is herself s three-quarter sister to Biarritz and Countess Corlia. “She’s a bay filly, also one with substance,” Marais told.

Having stood the mighty Jet Master and bred the likes of Pack Leader, Van Halen, Divine Odyssey, Mr Flood and In The Fast Lane, Klipdrif won’t be short of support at the auction this week.
