Lot 174: Gimmethegreenlight colt, half-brother to Vardy

In among their array of wonderful yearlings at the 2020 Cape Premier Yearling Sale are Klawervlei’s first William Longsword (Captain Al) offspring at a major auction, and the multiple champion breeders’ boss John Koster can’t wait to see them in the auction ring.

It’s not easy for Koster to single out any one William Longsword yearling, as he describes them all as “very similar to their sire, perfectly stamped!”, but his first sales colt, Lot 3, is perhaps the best example of this marked resemblance.  “He’s the second foal of Jamboree (Black Minnaloushe), from the family of Garland and Wavin’ Flag, a stunning colt.”

Meanwhile Lot 85, by William Longsword from Seattle Surprise (Distorted Humor) is considered an “absolute belter” while Lot 208 (William Longsword from Gr1 winner Fly By Night (Jet Master), is “a cracking individual from a top mare”. Enough said.

The ‘William’ fillies won’t be outdone and Koster noted: “Lot 18 is a peach of a filly out of the Windrush mare, Laughing River, who has had two promising foals so far. Lot 66, from Reconcile, represents the Captain Al/Silvano cross which is potent, as you will see from the pedigree in runners like Captain In Command and Canadian Sunset.

“Another amazing cross is the Captain Al/Storm Cat mating which has produced 12% stakes winners to runners, and this is applicable to Lot 182, a lovely William Longsword filly from Dive, by Storm Cat. This cross is evident in the pedigree of Vaughan Marshall’s current high-class performer, One World.”

William Longsword’s pedigree can also be seen in a Twice Over colt (Lot 178). He is considered a “classic type”, bred from William’s half-sister Dance At Dawn, by Trippi.

An “absolute beauty” sired by Twice Over is Lot 228,  a chestnut filly from Intelligent (First Samurai), herself a half-sister to sire, Philanthropist.

There is another Klawervlei filly from a Storm Cat mare to mention and that is Lot 76, a “very nice” filly sired by Gimmethegreenlight, and from the family of a host of US stakes winners.

Lot 24, Koster noted, is a Gimmethegreenlight filly from Magnolia Lane, a full-sister to former Irish star Yeats. “That’s a proper pedigree,” he said.

Most interested buyers would already have gone online to look at the photo of Lot 174 (above this article), the Gimmethegreenlight half-brother to last weekend’s Gr1 Queen’s Plate star, Vardy. Do yourself a favour. Don’t miss him in the flesh!

“He is absolutely gorgeous, a high quality colt with an incredible mind. He’s top class, athletic and beautiful,” Koster raved. This is a potential sales-topper.

Champion freshman sire Captain Of All has nine on this auction, two of them fillies raised by Koster, who said that Lot 64 is especially nice: “She’s a rangy, elegant daughter of Quest For Gold (Jallad), from the immediate family of Pomodoro and Golden Chariot.”

Pomodoro himself is represented by three Klawervlei-bred colts, and Lot 201 stands out. He was born from the Gr1 winner For The Lads (Trippi), from the family of Skin Tight and Durban July winner Heavy Metal.  “He’s a smart, athletic type,” said Koster.

Trippi himself has an outstanding bay colt from Klawervlei on offer (Lot 21), a good-looking son of Linda My Love, a half-sister to the formidable track stars Gold Flier, Successful Bidder and Trust Antonia.

From a great Klawervlei family comes Lot 110, a filly on the Silvano/Jet Master cross (a mating that produced Hawwaam). She’s by SA’s champion stallion from Thunder Dance, a sibling to Captain Al, Shadow Dancing and Mustang Manny.

The Klawervlei sales preview won’t be complete without reference to Dynasty’s Lot 173, the third foal of a mare by Lawyer Ron (USA). “He’s a beautiful colt with substance. His granddam is a half-sister to Monarchos, who won the 2001 Kentucky Derby.”
