Warrior's Rest (nearest camera), edges out Ultra Magnus (obscured) in Gr1 Golden Horse Sprint (Candiese Lenferna).

Warrior’s Rest (18-1) was one of several CTS graduates in Saturday’s Gr1 Golden Horse Sprint over 1200m at Scottsville, and one of five runners from Sean Tarry’s yard.

He fought out a tight finish to get the better of Ultra Magnus (12-1) by a short head. Third and fourth places went to fellow CTS purchases Kasimir and Chimichuri Run, respectively.

Jockey Callan Murray had Warrior’s Rest out of the gates in a flash and they raced up with the pace, just off a number of pacey contenders spread across the track

Over the last 200m it was left to Warrior’s Rest and Ultra Magnus to fight it out and after a close battle, the Tarry runner got his head in front to give Murray his 8th Gr1 winner.

Murray said: “We both levelled up with pace from the jump and I just thought this horse dug down deep. He’s a big individual and was really tough to the line.

“I haven’t had much success for Mr Tarry and it’s nice to have one at the highest level after so long. It’s also a privilege to ride a Group 1 winner for Mr van Niekerk in these silks.

Tarry commented: “The plan was I needed five to win it but I didn’t know which one! I must say, it was a really cool ride from Callan Murray. He’s a guy who has really stamped himself as one of the top jockeys in the country. He’s a very humble and professional young rider.

“He’s worked this horse regularly and deserves the Group 1 victory on him.”

Lammerskraal-bred, Warrior’s Rest was a R900,000 buy for Chris van Nierkek at the 2016 CTS Ready To Run Sale. He’s earned R893,000 from 25 starts, with six wins and seven places.
