GURU’s Pride justified tote favouritism to land the Listed New Turf Carriers Darley Arabian (1600m) at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Gold Cup Day, Saturday.

Guru’s Pride, trained by Gavin van Zyl and ridden by champion jockey Warren Kennedy, made it win number four, from just eight starts, when motoring home to score by just over three-parts of a length.

Bred by Klawervlei Stud, Guru’s Pride, whose four wins have all come on the polytrack, weaved his way through traffic to get up close home and win going away, setting a new course record.

“Guru’s Pride won three in a row earlier this year, then ran a good race in the Guineas so I am delighted to get this Listed win for owners Roy Baldeo and Colin Govindasamy,” said Van Zyl.

Kennedy said he’s always been impressed with the way Guru’s Pride quickens in a race and added: “He ran on from way back over 1200m last time, it was a lovely prep and this mile was up his alley.”

This was a 78th stakes winner for Drakenstein Stud’s Trippi, and Guru’s Pride was born from the mare Generous Anna, by General Nediym.

Guru’s Pride was a R370 000 buy from the 2018 CTS April Yearling Sale, and his career earnings now top R257,000, with more wins to follow.
