The CTS Cape Premier Yearling Sale has produced a steady sequence of high-quality Graded stakes winners since its inception in 2011. CTS will be going into its 11th year with high confidence of another superb sale for buyers and vendors on 6 February 2022, the graduates of CPYS sales having recorded a G1 Colts and Fillies Guineas double in December.

On 4 December, Sabine Plattner’s Chansonette posted a surprise win in the WSB Cape Fillies Guineas when she defeated Highveld raider – and hot favourite – Desert Miracle in a pulsating finish.

Trainer Andre Nel, who saddled his first G1 winner, enthused: “She is a special filly – she came in so well. I joked that it would take more than a miracle to beat us. Grant van Niekerk rode a pearler of a race. I have an issue that he can be too far back sometimes, but he assured me today he was on a mission. Thanks to Mrs Plattner and our whole team.”

Chansonette was bred by Maine Chance Farms and is a daughter of their rising star stallion Vercingetorix (Silvano) out of the twice-winning Querari mare, Champery.

A R500 000 Cape Premier Yearling Sale purchase, Chansonette has had 3 wins and 2 places from just 5 starts, for stakes of R427 400. Her sire will be represented by six lots on the 2022 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

A fortnight later, on 18 December, racing fans were treated to an authoritative display from owner Nic Jonsson’s lightly-raced Twice Over colt, Double Superlative, ridden by Anton Marcus.

Double Superlative was bred by Patricia Devine Investments, and has earned R539,600 from only five runs. He was bought at the 2020 Cape Premier Yearling Sale for R375 000.

“Nic Jonsson views on Twice Over have been vindicated. He has been saying that the sire’s progeny have been undervalued at the auctions and asked us to buy every one of them,” said trainer Justin Snaith.

Twice Over has eight lots on the 2022 Cape Premier Yearling Sale. The sale takes place on 6 February at De Grendel Estate.
