Daytona Stud’s Mike Barnard is a part-time rugby coach. Here he is with Springbok captain Siya Kolisi.

Mike Barnard’s Daytona Stud has a history of breeding solid, quality runners and he’s bringing three to CPYS this week.

The first yearling raised at Daytona will be Lot 44, Winter’s Destiny, a bay filly by What A Winter from Pacific Destiny, by Qui Danzig. The dam, a half-sister to a host of accomplished runners including Pacific Charm, Pacific Warrior and Stonehenge, has two winners from three runners to her name.

“Winter’s Destiny is strong and robust,” said Barnard.

Lot 128, he said, is a “smashing athletic colt”, sired by Twice Over, from the Jallad mare Warnie’s babe, who has already produced four decent multiple winners from four foals to race, and this one may develop into the best so far. He’s named Hurley Burley and comes from the immediate family of exported top sprinter, Tiza.

Daytona’s last is a Soft Falling Rain filly named Confetti Shower (Lot 159). She is bred from champion broodmare sire Fort Wood’s daughter, who has produced the Listed-placed Watsonia. “She’s a good-moving filly of quality,” Barnard said.
