Hero's Honour

Ten thoroughbreds bought at CTS auctions are among the nominees for the 2018 Equus Awards.

Van Halen, the Gr1 Gold Medallion winner, is one of two nominations in the Champion Two-year-old colt category, while Gr1 Thekwini Stakes winner Return Flight is nominated in the equivalent category for fillies.

Gr1 SA Derby winner Hero’s Honour holds nominations in the categories for Champion Three-year-old colt and Champion Stayer and Bold Respect was also nominated twice. His name appears in the categories for Champion Three-year-old colt and Champion Sprinter.

A third CTS purchase to receive two nominations in dual categories is Undercover Agent, South Africa’s highest-rated runner. He is another to appear in the Three-year-old Colt category and also has a chance of being awarded Champion Miler.

The now retired Captain America also has two chances of receiving honours. He will be the favourite in the Champion Older Male category and also holds a nomination in the Champion Middle Distance category.

Lobo’s Legend (Gr1 SA Classic) and Surcharge (Gr1 Daily News), both exported after respective classic wins, have been nominated in the Three-year-old colt Category.

Gr1 Computaform Sprint winner Attenborough and Gr1 Cape Flying Championship victor Sargeant Hardy are nominated in the Champion Sprinter Category.

The awards will be presented at black-tie gala event that takes place at the Convention Centre at Emperor’s Palace on Tuesday, 14 August.

Voting Criteria The awards are based on graded races and in particular Grade 1 races. As regards the stayer category, the winning horse will be at the discretion of the voting panel. This decision was taken as the only Grade 1 race in SA is the SA Derby, which would mean that this should be the obvious winner based on a single run. This would also have excluded fillies and mares.
