Cape Thoroughbred Sales (CTS) are customising the format of the 2020 renewal of the Ready To Run Sale to accommodate vendors in a hugely challenging year for the industry.

While the popular sale will return to its customary venue at Durbanville, and in its customary time slot on Friday, 27 November 2020, a number of changes will be instituted to adapt to market turbulence, which is expected to prevail for the duration of this year and possibly thereafter.

The adjusted sale will have two sections:

  • Ready to Run horses which will gallop before the Sale
  • 2-y-o horses, unbroken

A maximum of 300 horses will be catalogued, with a selections process if over-subscribed.

Wéhann Smith, CEO of CTS, said that the company felt a responsibility to clients and horses. The Sale will provide another opportunity to offload stock for breeders, and give many horses a chance in life which they might otherwise not have had.

“We realise this is going to be a very tough year, hence our decision to expand the Sale,” Smith said. “Any decisions on incentive races will be made before the end of August, at which time entries for the Sale will close. We hope to have more certainty about the state of the market by then.”

The CTS R2R Sale has been hugely successful in terms of the number of big race performers to have come from it.  It has produced a host of Graded and stakes performers including Red Ray (stallion), Rabada (stallion) Captain America, Liege, Sergeant Hardy, Bold Respect, Brave Mary, Hero’s Honour, Surcharge and Takingthepeace, to name but a few.

Smith added: “This sale has become synonymous with high-profile winners and a return on investment, and we are committed to keeping it up there as one of the most buyer-friendly thoroughbred sales in the global bloodstock industry.
