Ambiorix, a R250,000 graduate of the 2020 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, made virtually all the running on the inside rail at Kenilworth to win Saturday’s Listed Summer Juvenile Stakes over 1000m at Kenilworth on his debut.

That the good-looking two-year-old defeated several promising winners first time out, is just one part of the big impression he made – the manner of his victory stamped him as one of the standout successes on Cape Town Met day, and a colt to follow this season.

Ambiorix used his fast early cruising speed to put his opposition under pressure fully 450m out, and kept it up to put the result beyond doubt 100m out. He ran through strongly and won by a facile 2.5-lengths.

Jockey Luke Ferraris felt lots of power under him and said: “His maturity impressed me. He jumped smartly and galloped sweetly.”

Trainer Vaughan Marshall added: “He’s a special colt, we thought he’d be in the money. I think he will go further.”

Bred by Barbare Sanne’s Oldlands Stud, Ambiorix is by Vercingetorix out of Lady’s Slipper Stakes winner Darling Moon, who is a half-sister to G3 Graham Beck Stakes/G3 Cup Trial winner Astro News.

Ambiorix’s half-sister Moon Guide (VAR, Lot 49) will be sold at this year’s Premier Sale at De Grendel Estate on 14 March.

Another Oldlands-bred named Wolfram (Oratorio, Lot 148), will enjoy his share of visitors at the sale. His half-sister Duchess Now (Duke Of Marmalade), made a super winning debut at the Vaal on Saturday.
