Maine Chance Farms, with their terrific array of yearlings from leading stallions, will undoubtedly receive their usual support from buyers at the 2020 Cape Premier Sale.

Tim Bootsma of Maine Chance discussed his picks from individual sires, starting with their stalwart resident champion, Silvano.

“We have three superb Silvano’s at the sale, the first being Lot 22, Lidl Miss Sunshine, a daughter of Little Fastnet by Fastnet Rock. We bought her full-sister for R2-million, and later bought the mare herself. She’s a fine yearling.

“Lot 51 is Poltergeist, a very strong chestnut colt out of Perija, by Shamardal, who is a truly super broodmare sire. He is one of only two stallions in Europe, under the age of 20, to be in the Top 10 list of broodmare sires – the other being Oasis Dream. This is an impressive first foal, not typical of Silvano. He’s bred for speed, should come early.

“Lot 88, on the other hand, is a typical Silvano colt. He’s big and scopey, a very nice specimen out of Sensational Secret (Camden Park), whose five previous foals are all multiple winners.”

Among the Querari yearlings, Bootsma singled out Lot 10, Kalahari Ferrari, a son of Count Du Bois’ dual Gr3-winning daughter, Kinematic Countess. “He is nice and athletic, moves well.”

Lot 156 is Bowled Over, by Twice Over from Bold Nimph by Shamardal, with notes on Shamardal as one of the world’s best broodmare sires given. He is a big and strong son of Twice Ove, and a half-brother to Gr1 winner Mighty High.

Lot 163 is a filly named Chansonette, Bootsma believes is “by far the best Vercingetorix filly on the sale”. She’s the first foal of multiple Listed-placed Champery, by Querari and he commented: “The Silvano/Querari cross works well and here we have a son of Silvano mated with a Querari mare, it’s exciting.”

Cosmic Highway (Lot 169) is a son of Gimmethegreenlight from Cosmic Dream, by Silvano, whose daughter Cosmic Light won three times and was Gr2-placed. “This is another nice cross, he’s a strong and athletic colt.”

Bootsma also mentioned Lot 63, a smart-looking colt by Soft Falling Rain from a German-bred mare. He’s an impressive first foal.
