Samurai Warrior: The R50,000 buy has earned over R1,38-million!

Trainer Weiho Marwing says he will be aiming three-year-old Samurai Warrior at the Vodacom Durban July after his surprise win in the Gr1 SA Derby over 2450m on Saturday.

The handicappers were satisfied that a rating of 105 was a fair reflection of Samurai Warrior’s  performance and on this mark he will have a chance of getting into South Africa’s flagship race.

Marwing said: “I am not thinking of races like the Gold Bowl or the Gold Cup at this point. I think Samurai Warrior is the type of horse that will be suited to the July’s course and distance and we’ll be hoping to get in off his 105 rating. You never know, the stakes are good and he may be good enough to earn.”

Marwing bought Samurai Warrior for only R50,000 at the CTS April Yearling Sale in 2017 and he said: “He was one of only two Ideal World’s on the sale, bred by Hemel N Aarde Stud. I like him because he was big for a two-year-old, with good bone. At the time I had seen how well Hermoso Mundo was doing so this was a happy purchase!”

He added: “Samurai Warrior is owned by fire engineer Leon Potgieter and his wife Hester, who are beautiful people and would love to have a July runner. They had a good horse called Drumbold with me several years ago but Samurai Warrior was their biggest success so far.”

Marwing himself won the Derby in 2013 with Wylie Hall, now a promising stallion.
