Captain Lars, the amazing South African-bred gelding who races in the UK, posted his 24th career win in the Betway Selling Stakes over 1000m on the all-weather track at Newcastle on Monday evening. He took up the lead near the top of the straight and kept running gamely to win by half a length.

One of the most remarkably durable performers currently racing in Britain, Captain Lars (who had finished two lengths off former July Cup runner up Tropics two starts back) has now won or placed in no fewer than 46 races.

The popular nine-year-old won 11 races in 2018 alone and is the UK’s king of lower division sprint handicaps. He has become the proverbial ATM for trainer Archie Watson and regular jockey Thomas Greatrex and has now won the equivalent of R2,45-million.

Captain Lars, a R1 400 000 purchase from the 2011 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, is a tremendous advertisement for the soundness of the South African thoroughbred. He also won or was placed in ten of his 12 South African outings, and scored his biggest local triumph when victorious in the Listed Drum Star Handicap in 2014.

Captain Lars received recognition for his feats when named ARC Outstanding All-Weather Horse at the 37th Annual Racehorse Owners Association Horseracing Awards last year. The tough old campaigner remarkably also holds an entry for Chelmsford this Friday!  One of the dozens of stakes winners by Klawervlei Stud’s deceased champion sire Captain Al, Captain Lars is a full-brother to former Equus Champion, the recently deceased Always In Charge.
