Basadi Faith, rallied gamely to win the SA Fillies Nursery.

Paul Matchett, who won the 2017 renewal of the Gr1 Allan Robertson Champion Stakes at Scottsville with CTS Ready To Run bargain buy Brave Mary, has a chance of repeating the feat on 25 May with Basadi Faith.

Matchett’s latest star cost just R45,000, slipping through the net at the CTS March Sale in 2018 for just R5,000 more than Brave Mary.

The Randjesfontein trainer spoke after Basadi Faith had won Saturdays Gr2 SA Nursery over 1160m at Turffontein, her fourth success from as many starts, and said: “We know Scottsville is never an easy track for newcomers, but we have a good filly to compete with and she’s getting stronger still.”

He noted that Basadi Faith’s form has already been franked in Durban, saying: “Tobie Spies had a pair of fillies that ran one-two in the Strelitzia Stakes at Greyville on Friday so we’re hopeful.”

Basadi Faith (27-20) had to fight to win the Nursery, for the first time in her career, but she did so admirably under Devin Habib, keeping a determined Cavivar (Piere Strydom) at bay.

Matchett said he couldn’t compare Basadi Faith to Brave Mary as they were different types of fillies, but one can safely assume that the hard-galloping daughter of Master Of My Fate is in the same class as her exported predecessor.

Brave Mary, bred by Favour Stud, races for Joe Abreu and Juanita van der Merwe.
