Having just hosted another spectacular L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Festival, Gaynor Rupert of Drakenstein Stud will be upbeat for the 2020 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, at which her farm will present its usual high quality variety of potential future champions.

Drakenstein’s 11 yearlings on the sale (three to be sold ‘as agent’), comprise three by What A Winter, two each by Silvano, Trippi and Futura and one apiece by VAR and Duke Of Marmalade.

Asked to single out three of their best – not an easy task considering the overall exceptional standard of the draft, Drakenstein’s Kevin Sommerville commented: “I’d say the pair of Silvano’s and the Trippi colt from Chestnuts and Pearls are my favourites in a really good consignment.”

Lot 15 is Silver Falcon (Silvano – Lanner Falcon x Trippi). By a champion stallion out of a mare who won a Gr2 and was multiple Graded-placed, Sommerville said about this young colt: “He is beautiful and very racy with wonderful hind legs. The sale may have come just a touch early for him, but discerning buyers will be able to see his quality. We’ve brought the speed of Lanner Falcon into Silvano, we’ll be looking forward to his career.”

The other Drakenstein-bred Silvano colt is Lot 91, I Want It All, the second foal of Song Of Happiness, by Giant’s Causeway. His granddam dam is the accomplished former Champion Miler Captain’s Lover, from the immediate family of other champions Ebony Flyer and Vardy – the blood is there, the looks too.

Sommerville said: “I Want It All is strong and well put together. He walks well and one of the attributes I like about him is his great mind. He knows what it’s all about. He’s a half-brother to a filly by Duke Of Marmalade we sold for R3,2-million at last year’s sale.”

The Trippi colt (Lot 164), is the first foal of Gr1 winner Chestnuts and Pearls, by proven broodmare sire Horse Chestnut from a deep, black type-laden female line. “His name is Roaming Stone and he has everything, from his wonderful family to his movie-star looks. He’s a typical Trippi, we have high hopes for him.”
