The annual Cape Thoroughbred Sales (CTS) Ready to Run (RTR) Sale will be held on Friday 23 November at the Durbanville racecourse, with gallops preceding the event on Thursday 22 November. The sale is followed by the lucrative CTS Ready to Run Stakes, set to take place at Kenilworth on 24 November, with a generous R2,5 million stake on offer to qualifying CTS graduates.
The Ready to Run Sale is a popular event on the annual bloodstock calendar, as it provides potential buyers with an opportunity to purchase a schooled and pre-trained 2-year old, foregoing the year-long wait buyers need to endure after purchasing a yearling. In addition, the gallops offer a preview of how the horse moves at full gallop, as well as the opportunity for timing over a few furlongs. “Viewing a horse in stride can sway a would-be bidder by providing a more holistic perspective of the horse’s ability, along with the obligatory scrutinizing of pedigree and conformation,” remarks Wéhann Smith, CEO of CTS.
The sale also promises exciting and lucrative pinhooking opportunities. The Top 20 Pinhooks from last year’s CTS RTR Sale raked in profits in excess of R7,4 million for speculators, with an average profit of R380,000 for each of the Top 20. Khopesh, by freshman sire Jackson (out of the regally bred Western Winter mare Ruby Heart) was last year’s no 1 pinhook, selling for R700,000 – a profit of R655,000 over its original purchase price.
“The allure of pinhooking for seasoned buyers is the untapped earning potential and excitement of the unknown. It can also act as a stepping stone for those new to the industry who may be hesitant to commit to owning a racehorse-in-training themselves, affording them the opportunity to learn more about bloodstock while potentially profiting from the process”, says Smith.
