HERE is the second of a three-part stallion review in which SARAH WHITELAW of Sporting Post takes a look at the sires represented at this weekend’s CTS March Yearling Sale.

Elusive Fort

A champion son of the great Fort Wood, Elusive Fort is one of South Africa’s most promising young stallions. The former Equus champion has sired Grade One winners in each of his first two small crops date, in the form of Siren’s Call and Lauderdale respectively, and Elusive Fort is also sire of impressive 2yo debut winner Safe Harbour. He has six on offer here:

Lot 39 – a brother to 3 winners, this colt is out of a six times Gr3 performer, with his notable relatives including former Gr1 SA Nursery winner Forest Trogon

Lot 75 – out of a two time winning daughter of champion sire and emerging broodmare sire Captain Al (whose sire Al Mufti formed a formidable rapport with Elusive Fort’s sire Fort Wood), this filly is from a strong filly family, with her relatives including the top class Gr1 winning female Dynamite Lady among others

Lot 143 – a half sister to five winners, this filly’s second and third dams are by the great broodmare sires Northern Guest and Royal Prerogative respectively, and this is the family of high class sprinter Big Sky Country

Lot 184 – a half sister to two winners (and bred on the powerful Sadler’s Wells/Kingmambo cross), this filly’s dam is a half sister to graded winners Heat Of The Night (also successful in North America) and Naughty Prince (with the latter pair, like the filly on sale, being sired by a Sadler’s Wells line horse)

Lot 202 – out of a smart six time winner, this filly is from the same family as high class 2yos Windsor Forest and her second Decorated Hero, as well as classy sprinters Royal Exit and Umngazi

Lot 210 – out of a half sister to four winners (and bred on the powerful Sadler’s Wells/Danehill cross), this filly’s second dam is a full sister to Gr3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery winner Hell’s Angel and this is also the family of champion sprinter Mythical Flight, among others

Fort Wood

One of the most influential sires ever to stand at stud in South Africa, the now deceased Fort Wood was a champion sire, sire of sires, and broodmare sire. His numerous top flight winners include three sons named Horse Of The Year and his sons Dynasty, Horse Chestnut and Elusive Fort have all enjoyed success at stud. The late, great champion has one on sale:

Lot 4 – out of a winning daughter of Zabeel’s unbeaten Gr1 winning son Reset, this well bred filly’s second dam, by champion sprinter and outstanding broodmare sire Anabaa, is a three parts sister to champion filly Blue Duster and her Gr1 winning brother Zieten

Lot 2 – bred on the very successful More Than Ready/Danehill cross, this colt is out of a winning daughter of Horse Of The Year Rock Of Gibraltar and from the family of European stars Divine Proportions, Pentire and outstanding sire Shirley Heights, among many others

Lot 9 – another out of a Rock Of Gibraltar (by Danehill) mare, this colt’s dam was stakes placed at two and her second dam is the Danehill sired Gr1 Flight Stakes winner Danarani

Lot 38 – a half brother to 3 winners, one of whom won five, this colt’s dam is a Redoute’s Choice half sister to an Australian stakes winner and this is the great Denise’s Joy, responsible for the outstanding More Than Ready sired champion More Joyous

Lot 41 – a half brother to 2 winners, this bay colt (inbred to the great sire Halo) is from the family of champions Along Came Polly and Young Rake (by Jet Master’ sire Rakeen), as well as Gr1 Champions Cup hero Master Plan. The latter is a three parts brother to this colt’s Jet Master sired dam

Lot 57 – a half brother to a winner, this colt is out of a half sister to Gr1 Paddock Stakes winner Thunder Dance, while second dam is a multiple Gr1 winning half sister to champion sire and Gr1 Cape Guineas winner Captain Al

Lot 128 – this colt is out of a speedy mare who won three times up to 1200m, and this is the family of Gr1 winner Dynamite Lady

Lot 138 – also out of a mare by champion Rock Of Gibraltar, this filly’s dam is a half sister to a stakes winner and from the family of Irish 2000 Guineas and promising young sire Roderic O’Connor, while fourth dam is champion filly Durtal

Lot 225 – from the family of the lightning fast Gr1 winner Mythical Flight, this filly is out of a half sister to high class stakes winning fillies Princess Sassi and Secret Obsession

Lot 235 – a half sister to a six time winner in France, this filly, whose relatives include star French galloper Priolo, traces back in female line to the great Grey Flight, and her relatives include champion sire What A Pleasure, promising SA sire Philanthropist and champion filly Misty Morn.

Gitano Hernando

An exceptional racehorse, Gitano Hernando was a multiple Gr1 winner who banked more than $2 000 000 in stakes. A real globetrotter, the handsome chestnut’s wins included the Gr1 Goodwood Stakes and Gr1 Singapore International Cup. He has made a pleasing start with his first 2yos this season – with three of his first few runners finishing in the money. He has 10 lots on sale:

Lot 33 – inbred to Danzig, this filly is out of a three parts sister to Gr2 SA Fillies Nursery winner State Factor and is from the family responsible for such as Corning Touch and former Horse Of The Year National Colour.

Lot 71 – a half sister to the stakes placed Dynasty’s Pride, this filly (also inbred to undefeated legend Danzig) is out of a five time winning daughter of Western Winter and the 12 time graded winner Eternal Dancer

Lot 93 – this filly is out of a winning Jet Master half sister to Gr3 winner Laser Fan and hails from the family of sprint stars Nobely Born and Trip Tease as well as champion sire Great Nephew – sire of Derby winners Grundy and Shergar

Lot 104 – out of a stakes placed winner of five, this chestnut colt hails from the family of champion Soberbo and numerous other good class South American runners

Lot 111 – a half sister to four winners, this filly is out of a winning Model Man mare from the family of champions Jay Peg and Kochka

Lot 114 – inbred to the great matron Fairy Bridge, this colt is a half brother to a winner and from a top US family with his relatives including the Gr1 winning 2yo Collins

Lot 133 – a half brother to a winner, this colt’s dam won four and is from the extended family of Horse Of The Year Potrillon

Lot 141 – bred on the very potent Nijinsky II/Blushing Groom cross, this colt’s third dam’s Gr3 Sceptre Stakes winner Foverflo – a Foveros half sister to champion Flobayou and 2 other stakes winners

Lot 198 – out of a daughter of seven times champion sire Jet Master, this filly’s relatives include the high class females Aqua Star and Leisure Guide as well as former Horse Of The Year and successful sire and broodmare sire Model Man

Lot 233 – out of a winning half sister to 2 smart black type performers, this filly is out of a winning daughter of triple champion sire Western Winter and Gr1 Empress Club Stakes winner Fading Light, remarkably, her second, third and fourth dams are all stakes winners!

Great Britain

One of the best bred horses standing at stud in South Africa, the former Al Quoz Sprint winner Great Britain’s full brother Cape Cross is one of Europe’s top sires, with his offspring including Sea The Stars, Ouija Board and Golden Horn. From limited opportunities, Great Britain has already produced a Gr1 performer in Mystical Twilight, and 13 of his 15 first crop runners have won or finished in the money. He has six on offer:

Lot 86 – inbred to the great sire Danzig, this filly’s dam, by emerging broodmare sire National Emblem, is a half sister to seven times stakes winner Jettatura – herself the dam of talented feature race contender Master’s Eye. The Danzig line star Joshua’s Princess is another notable performer in the family.

Lot 135 – out of a three parts sister to a stakes performer, this colt’s second dam is top class Gr2 winner Tarn Fairy, whose brilliant granddaughter , Yoshie, like the colt on sale, is by a Danzig line sire

Lot 146 – this colt, who hails from the mighty La Troienne female line, is out of a winning Western Winter half sister to 2 stakes horses, including a Gr1 performer and other notables in this family include Oaks winner Gleaming Sky and French Derby winner and champion sire Caerleon

Lot 186 – out of a mare by the great Dynasty, this filly is from the family of top 2yo and promising young sire Zebedee and champion Miss Alleged, the latter being the dam of former successful Highlands sire Joshua Dancer (by Danzig)

Lot 221 – another inbred to Danzig, this colt is a half brother to five winners and is also from the family of Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Miss Alleged and the talented Danzig line horse Zebedee.

Grey’s Inn

One of more than 40 Gr1 winners sired by the late, great Zabeel, the former Equus Champion has enjoyed a real purple patch of late, with Greys Inn runners including Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate/Gr1 SA Derby hero Legal Eagle and Dubai star Forries Waltz. The multiple Gr1 winner, whose half sister produced 2016 Met winner Smart Call, has four lots on sale:

Lot 3 – half brother to a winner, this colt is from an outstanding family with his relatives including Gr1 Summer Cup winner Wolf Whistle and Horse Of The Year Wolf Power (damsire of US Horse Of The Year Wise Dan). Inbred to the great Nureyev-a pattern which is also found in the dam of European star Golden Horn.

Lot 50 – out of a half sister to a stakes horse, this filly’s dam is a three parts sister to champion Horse Chestnut (damsire of Smart Call), champion Monyela and Gr2 winners Cork Wood and Iron Curtain

Lot 120 – out of a mare who won three, this filly is related to none other than Horse Of The Year and red hot sire Dynasty, and she traces back directly in female line to Source Sucree, whose son Turn-To is the male line ancestor of Greys Inn’s grandsire Sir Tristram

Lot 191 – bred on the same cross as Gr2 Al Rashidiya winner Forries Waltz, this filly, a sister to 2 winners, is out of a three part sister to high class filly Mary Lou, whose half brother is Gr1 winner African Appeal.

Horse Chestnut

One of the greatest horses ever bred in South Africa, the late, great Horse Chestnut has enjoyed plenty of success both as a sire and as a broodmare sire – he features as the damsire of this year’s Met winning superstar Smart Call and is sire of Gr1 winners Chestnuts N Pearls and Lucifer’s Stone, among others. The former Triple Crown winner has 15 yearlings on sale:

Lot 26 – intriguingly inbred to champion sire Fort Wood (sire of Horse Chestnut and Dog Rose), this filly is out of a smart stakes placed granddaughter of Fillies Guineas winner Dog Rose. The latter, dam of Gr3 winner Saluki, is in turn a half sister to multiple Gr1 winner Lord Shirldor

Lot 85 – a half brother to a winner, this colt is out of a half sister to top class filly Real Red, and from the family of champion Politician, as well as broodmare of the Year Jessamine, dam of Gr1 winners Al Nitak and The Sheik

Lot 87 – a half brother to 4 winners, this colt (whose dam is by world leading sire and broodmare sire Red Ransom) is out of a half sister to a US stakes winner and is bred on the very successful Sadler’s Wells/Roberto cross

Lot 98 – a three parts brother to Gr1 placed stakes winner Noblewood, this colt is also a very close relative of Gr2 Drill Hall Stakes winner Syon, with both those two geldings being sired by Horse Chestnut’s sire Fort Wood

Lot 155 – out of a winning daughter of champion sire Silvano, this filly is from a top international family and her relatives include Gr1 winning 2yo Full Of Gold

Indigo Magic

A son of Gone West and Epsom Oaks heroine Lady Carla, Indigo Magic is the sire of top class performers Shades of Indigo, Go Indigo and Darling Moon from limited opportunities. He is also an emerging broodmare sire, with his daughters responsible for the likes of Cat And The Moon and Hard Day’s Night. He has one on sale:

Jay Peg

A globe trotting superstar and Equus Champion, Jay Peg is enjoying a purple patch with his 3yos this season. The sire of such talented 2yos as Hot Affair and Flash Drive, Jay Peg’s 3yo crop this season includes five in a row stakes winner Exit Here and Gr2 Selangor Cup hero Victorious Jay, as well as the promising filly She’s A Dragon. Just As Well

A top class racehorse, Just As Well is a Gr1 winning son of US champion and multiple champion sire A P Indy, whose top class sire sons include the likes of Bernardini, Malibu Moon, Pulpit (sire of Tapit) andJudpot. Just As Well’s first crop, now 3, include a number of highly rated performers including Gr1 contenders Just As I Said and Well In Flight. He has one on offer:

Lot 189 – out of a mare by top miler and broodmare sire Grand Lodge (damsire of former Summer Cup winner Strategic News among others), this colt is from an outstanding female line with his relatives including champions Dayjur and Sky Beauty (the latter a member of the US Racing Hall of Fame) as well as such Gr1 winners as Pine Island, Point Of Entry and Tale Of Ekati.

King Of Kings

Now deceased, the son of champion sire Sadler’s Wells was a superb racehorse, who won the Gr1 National Stakes at two and the Gr1 2000 Guineas at three. A proven sire, his stock includes champion King’s Chapel and Gr1 winners Ike’s Dream and Reigning To Win, and also features as broodmare sire of former Breeders’ Cup winner Regally Ready.
