Talented gelding Linebacker, a R425 000 buy from the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, showed his class when he won Saturday’s Gr1 Jonsson Workwear Cape Derby over 2000m at Kenilworth.

The Derby was a great result for the Premier Sale, with 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale buys Linebacker and Rascallion finishing first and second respectively and both horses look on course for big seasons.

Linebacker came home with a resounding victory. This was justice served after a series of tough beat seconds in four successive Stakes races. “I knew he had the race won in an instant, he just got there so easily and it’s scary how good he is!” extolled jockey Grant van Niekerk, after piloting the son of Captain Of All with aplomb.

Trainer Vaughan Marshall, who had the distinction of saddling this Grade 1 exacta as Rascallion held second, said that the more work he threw at Linebacker and further he stretched his limits in training, the more the horse thrived.

Any doubts about Klawervlei Stud bred thoroughbred lasting home over this longer route were dispelled in his mind beforehand after some bullet work -outs, and the race itself showcased Marshall’s vastly experienced handling of quality Classic performers.

Linebacker is out of the Australian-bred Redoute’s Choice mare Thin Red Line, whose two career wins were both over 1000m – but she was placed over 1800m and 2000m.

Linebacker has won 2 races with 4 places from 6 starts and stakes of R761 500. He races for owners Cheryl Gabler in partnership with Ken and Jane Truter.
