Chimichuri Run is a colt by Trippi from Spiced Gold, and was named after a spicy sauce made in Argentina. His dam was a hot runner, too. Spiced Gold dead-heated with Here To Win in the Gr1 2010 SA Filliies Classic over 1800m and Chimichuri Run, her third foal, fetched R1,1-million at the 2017 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

Chimichuri Run won Saturday’s Gr3 Umkhimazi Stakes over 1200m as he liked, drawing away with a lightning turn of foot and trainer Sean Tarry said: “He is very talented, he is bred to see out a mile, but he has excellent pace, we may just keep him sprinting for now.”

Tarry and owner Chris van Niekerk fancied the two-year-old on Saturday and Tarry commented: “Chimichuri Run only had to make up 1,5-lengths on the favourite (Cue The Music) on the Gold Medallion form. I wasn’t worried about that, I was more concerned about his wide draw but S’Manga Khumalo took the race by the scruff of the neck and beat the draw, well done to him.”

Tarry said that Chimichuri Run had suffered a few niggles, he hasn’t been easy to train, but that the was “getting there”. He commented. “He’ll be aimed at the Gauteng season now, we’ll bring him back in October or November”. Khumalo said: “He came out well and we had them beaten for pace, so I decided to go forward from the draw. We may have hit the front too early, he raced green over the last 400m but won well, he had a bit in hand. Well done to the team, they’ve done a lot of hard work with him.”
