Surcharge, who was bought back for R550 000 by Dusty Trail Investments off the 2016 CTS Johannesburg Ready To Run Sale, finally added a Gr1 win to his list of major seconds.

The three-year-old colt from Stuart Pettigrew’s stable produced his usual powerful finish under jockey Gunter Wroggeman in Saturday’s Daily News over 2000m and got there this time, running on too strong for Majestic Mambo, another CTS purchase of the same Ready To Run Sale at only R40,000, completing a CTS Gr1 Exacta.

Tap O’Noth (third) and Do It Again (fourth), filled the minor placings.

“Ian van Schalkwyk is over the moon, he is really happy,” said Pettigrew who confirmed that he and the owner are in agreement that Surcharge will not be taking his place in the Vodacom Durban July.

“He’s now had four hard runs in a row and we’re not going to push him into the July, which would include another eight-hour trip on a float. We’re putting him away for a deserved rest, he’s only three, still a big baby and will return better and stronger at four.”

Having won the Summer Cup with his previous star galloper Tyson, Pettigrew knows what it takes to win Johannesburg’s premier race, but he suggested that the November race is not foremost on Surcharge’s agenda.

He said: “It makes sense to avoid the handicaps, so we’ve set the 2019 Sun Met as our long-term target because it is a weight-fore-age race. Surcharge battles to get on the pace, as we know, but Gunter has suggested we try a pair of small blinkers on him and Ian and I are discussing it. If he can be a bit more eager in blinkers the Queen’s Plate will be a suitable prep run, but we’ll see.”

Bred by Varsfontein Stud, Surcharge is by Gimmethegreenlight (More Than Ready) out of the UK-bred Congestion Charge (Diktat), who was placed over 2300m from just 4 starts. Surcharge has won 6 races with 4 places from 11 starts for stakes of R2 273 375.
